Thanks Allegra, your words are inspiring! And very true, i actually feel better if i have a few odds and ends to make up something rather than an expensive bit of meat or the like to make a certain dish, i have a panic attack! I actullay made a chilli con carne the other day, just because i had the ingredients there and just made it up, probably not "right" but it tasted quite nice for me! OH was quite impressed, for a change!

I think it might be this one from The Pauper's Cook Book by Jocasta Innes;)
  • We survived Feb living out of the cupboards which is good news. But going into March money is tighter than ever, I’ve already calculated that by the end of the month I’ll be at a £300 deficit if I spend my usual £250 on food, so im looking to cut back on food (and everything else)

We lived out of the cupboards last month im very low on food, im running out of pretty much everything so I want to try and make a full monthly meal plan so I only buy what I need. We are a family of 4 with one vegetarian, Whats the best way to start i've never done a full months plan before.
  • I do monthly meal plans and try to shop as little as possible by living out of cupboards and freezer.
I have just bought 4 chickens BOGOF and 15 pork chops and 4 joints on offer in supermarket.
I spend about €150 on top ups of milk, butter, fruit etc I yse frozen veg
I can copy you my meal plan if that helps?

    So my tips:
write a list of everything you've got and work out as many meals as possible - write these down on your plan.
do as many cheap pasta meals as possible - our fave is macoroni cheese with tuna as does two meals.
Rubber Chicken - we have this every fortnight and a chicken does 4 meals (roast, pie, pie scraps in pasta, chicken fried rice)
We have a soup day every Monday - no moaning, if you don't like it tough:rotfl:
No seconds for H - kids can have seconds
Smaller portions for me and H
Don't buy anything you don't need
Don't throw anything out - reuse all scraps even gravy
make everything from scratch - biscuits, snacks etc

    Good luck
    gotta go as nippers fighting!

oh and on your meal plan as you think of meals for next month or put scraps in freezer jot these down for next months plan

  • Take a look at this recent thread on Monthly Meal Planning (I'll merge this later ;) ).

I like to meal plan, but I'm very flexible if I spot a bargain :T I'd also advise you to try and shop seasonally, and try your butcher and greengrocer for more bargains.

    Good luck.
