My dear Mum died last year due to the side effects of many years of smoking - emphsyema being one of her problems. I also smoked despite all the knowledge of damage cigarettes cause and working as a health professional....
Its ALWAYS worth a go at stopping. The thing that I used was Allen Carr's book - he will explain to you how its not an addiction and that you aren't giving anything up! I didn't have any expectations that it would work but it did. Best few quid I ever spent ( probably cost less than a pack of ciggies now!) and I passed the book on to a friend who gave up also.
Now I don't feel guilty/scared/ill when I wake up because cigarettes are not part of my life.
Just my twopenn'orth...

If Idecide to smoke so be it, or spend £100 per week on them. Which I don't! The end of the day smoking is not going place me in the rd for Cancer etc. It may increase the chances, however WILL not 100% for sure mean I develop Cancer etc.
My view is this: If I end up with one leg off etc, well so be it. Life for today, not hiding away from the ifs and buts etc. Aint for me!
A few things can be said , however I choose not to. Purely with content of some posts.0 -
The only thing that ever really stops people smoking is the pain of their first heart attack.
they will keep smoking even with their legs dropping off and when they are blue without oxygen.
It is very easy to spot smokers - however the cracker is when you ask people how many they smoke and they say " oh I don't smoke doctor", - so when did you give up? "this morning".0 -
No, he was supposed to go to the G.P. for the blowing into the machine but decided as the X-Ray was normal then he must be fine, I'm not sure this is true but then again would an X-Ray not show any abnormalities?
I suppose my worry is that he isn't helping himself by just ignoring then again I may just be worrying needlessly because this has happened after giving up smoking and putting on weight.
get him to have the test,i have excellent xrays time after time but my breathing apparently is not disimlar to a 90 year olds(i`m 51)but the inhalers(i have 2)make a massive difference0 -

!
I gave up smoking twenty years ago after having smoked quite heavily for about twenty years. I had a smokers' cough, but nothing else.
I had my first asthma attack since I was 20 AFTER I gave up smoking. I do think it is to do with the sensitivity of your lungs becoming greater as they get cleaner.
Glad to say I just had the one attack.
As regards the breathlessness, I too have put on weight since i gave up smoking and find myself running out of puff on steep hills etc.
To the OP, I would persuade your husband to have the test for COPD and put everybody's mind at rest.
To Bryando, I have a friend my age (60) who smokes as much as you do. She has a persisitent wheezy chest, a rattly cough and gets out of breath just answering the telephone. She worries me to death and I would hate to think a young man like you could not kick the habit before it permanently destroys your health. Did you know that ALL the nicotine is doing now is stopping you having withdrawal symptoms? It is not 'calming you down' or helping you through the day, it is not your friend.
My husband's cousin who is 55 and has smoked since she was 15 has managed to give up two years ago with her Doctor's help. I'm sure yours could help you too.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

I dont often lecture anyone so excuse me a minute
I hate to see young people smoke,my own kids aged 22 and 26 do and i wish they would stop NOW.
I started smoking at the age of 10 in the late 60`s i`ve now smoked for 41 years and its killing me,12 years ago i had 2 strokes at the age of 38,the second left me with severe epilepsy,3 years ago it was found i had mild copd, last year i found out i have a faulty heart valve which is due to clogging of a main artery i will need heart surgery in the near future.
ALL of this caused by smoking and my stupid stupid refusal to stop.
SO i urge you at the age of 24 to give up now because one way or another it will kill you0 -
My wonderful mum died from COPD but she refused to give up smoking,it was her decision and i respected it,as long as she was happy,it's coming up for 3 years soon and it still hurts like hell. But i still continue to smoke and hate myself each time i light up,but it is not easy to stop it is after all an addiction. My girls get cross with me all the time for smoking and yes i feel guilty but still i do it.Not for the devil of it simply because i can't give up.:o:(
Oh I remember well the addiction! I couldn't give it up either until my Pastor prayed for me and I had no withdrawal symptoms after that. Now I'm not for one minute suggesting that this will be everyone's way of doing it, but the point I'm making is, you have to find what will work for you. That was my way. My husband went Cold Turkey. His cousin had some tablets from the Doctor and went to a special clinic. Other people use patches. (ETA: Or Allen Carr's book, as mentioned above!).
But of course all these things are only aids to help you, it is up to you to want. to and make the decision to give up. But don't forget there is help out there for you once you decide.
Good luck(AKA HRH_MUngo)

I am 41 and have just been diagnosed with copd and a lung function of 50%, and I am still smoking. Yes i know it's stoopid, but I can't give up. I have known people to get it years after they have given up. Seven day, get a test done if your breathless as you could still have it.0
