Help with a new Mattress.

Am thinking about getting a mattress topper for my son's bed as he has difficulty sleeping and says he thinks one of the reasons is that his current mattress is uncomfortable because he can feel the springs. We already swapped this mattress for his brother's (who is out like a light no matter what he is sleeping on) because the new one that we had bought for him was "too hard". (I know he is being incredibly fussy but when you have a child who cannot get to sleep for 2 hours after going to bed every night, and is then shattered in the morning, you want to do all you can to help).
I was wondering whether something with a depth of only 2" would make any difference but can see posts saying how comfortable they are so guess it does. My question is would I be better off swapping the harder mattress back from his brother's bed and putting the topper on that, or putting it on the softer mattress on which he can feel the springs?
Many thanks in advance for any help.0 -

If your son can feel the springs because they have broken, then the mattress needs replacing.
If he can feel the springs because it is a low quality mattress with very little quilting, and you don't want to go to the expense of buying a new mattress, then you would be better off with a reflex foam topper (not memory foam). This is because with memory foam you sink into it, so what is under the memory foam needs to be of good quality also.
With reflex foam you don't sink into it as much, so it will provide more padding. Reflex foam is also far cheaper than memory foam. The down side is that it doesn't last as long, and it can be very warm.0 -

Thanks for the advice. I think it is because it is a low quality mattress. What if I swapped him to the other, firmer, mattress? Would a memory foam topper make it a bit softer for him? Have searched reflex foam topper on ebay with no results - where do they sell these please? Have to say though am a bit reluctant to buy him anything too warm, or that will be the next reason he can't sleep!0 -

No, memory foam has to be high density to work properly, and isn't there to make a mattress softer.
Many markets have stalls selling upholstery foam, and they will usually cut it to size for you.0 -

Thanks for all your help Tim, looks like I will have to think again. Do you think it might help to get him an airbed to use as a mattress instead as that might not be so hot as foam? BTW, just as a matter of interest, as the memory foam topper isn't there to make the mattress softer please can you advise what the benefits of a memory foam topper are?0 -

Personally I wouldn't use an air bed, as they don't give as good support, and they can actually be more sweaty, as air can't pass through the fabric.
Memory foam is designed to provide even support for the body without causing pressure points.0 -

once you start feeling the springs its time to get a new one
toppers wont help with support

I was along at their shop the other day looking at getting a new mattress or maybe even full bed if funds allow
all seemed decent quality?0 -

Actually it depends on the mattress. You can feel the springs on many budget mattresses when they are new.
To be honest I really don't know much about the quality of Blindcraft mattresses. However it is a good cause.0 -
no worries Tim,well when i was in the mattresses felt good,in as much as you can tell
the frames seemed really well made though
plenty of weight to them0
