    good points arty.

I'm happy to hear it if I've got the wrong end of the stick!

I just wondered if you testers are an exceptional bunch of people who could make it work, but perhaps real shirl can't (but not that she's 'bad'!)

The thing is I think it is daunting for a person to look at and think 'Oh golly, what if this goes horribly wrong', however I dont think it will as some of the recipes are fool proof (carbonara).

In regards to us being able to do it well-remember me being worried about it at first? I know I am not an exceptional cook (mr arty is much much better than me) and I am not very good at adding bits and bobs to make a dish even yummier but I think I managed most things well.

Not that I want to write this-but maybe you are bigging us up too much:o

ETA: When I say us-I really mean me as part of the testing gang. There are many many exceptional people here. Sorry if I sounded dismissivex

    Am I making any sense?

    Does anyone agree?

You are making perfect sense, but I am not sure I agree. And I am not quite sure how to explain why I don't. Very helpful, I know ;)

I think it might be because no recipe is fool-proof. Even Delia does not manage that. Trust me, I know. Plus learning how to tweak and fiddle and rectify mistakes is an essential part of learning how to cook.

I do agree, however, that many a novice cook could well end up blaming the recipe or the site, and walk away in disgust. I don't think you can prevent that, I'm afraid.

On the other hand, as I am completely incapable of following a recipe to the letter, I am probably the completely wrong person to comment on this !

Thinking on this a bit more..........

if I make a jamie recipe from his cook books (and I do quite a lot:D) and it doesnt taste quite right or looks a bit wrong (which has also happened alot:(:D) I don't blame Jamie. Instead I realise I have probably made a mistake and that I need to follow the recipe better next time. I don't think Shirley will blame the site or you (unless she is a very angry person) but will start thinking about how she can make it better and in doing so teaches herself to fish......voila

Actually and in comparison if a recipe goes wrong for Mr arty he just adds things and tweaks it until it tastes nice, which I think is what you, Allegra, Lesley and Sian would do but I wouldnt.

i should get my DH to cook some recipes, weezl. He's very much a follow the recipe by the letter and NON intuitive cooker. He gets very frustrated if recipes don't go exactly right and seems at a loss on how to self correct. My complete opposite, really! :p

Well I tend to have three options

    1) eat it, as I dont like to waste food:money:
    2) If its completely inedible, throw it. I must say I have only done this once or twice in all my life.
    3) The most likely option-call mr arty into the kitchen and get him to sort it out:D
