Indeed these cameras are part of the Highways Agency digital enforcement system (HADECS)and are installed on top of each gantry. The cameras are set to enforce anything as low as 10% (displayed speed) although are usually set to +10mph. The cameras are still operating when nothing is displayed although usually set to 100mph. The police can set them as low as 80mph.

they are not installed on each gantry, they are installed on some gantries on that stretch of the m25.

I also call BS on them being active and set to 100mph. I know this from years of er, experience, without any points.

They definitely are operational when a variable speed limit is in place though, seen them flash regularly.

Actually inspite of all the garbage we have all posted, variable speed limits, with hopefully a little more tolerance on the highest limit under the lowest traffic, has to be the way forwards.

The only reason that speed limits are in place is to protect US from the idiots in society that cannot differentiate between rush hour in the suburbs and the lonely saturday night on the M180:mad:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Do you know why we have speed limits on motorways (originally there were none)? To give you a clue it has nothing to do with accidents.

If I recall correctly it was a fuel saving measure introduced at the time when petrol rationing was last issued during the early seventies, remember because it coincided with me buying my 1st car, I got a handfull of coupons with it, 1972 or 73??, thereabouts,

  • The United States has a 55mph motorway speed restriction because of the petrol rationing right?

Correct, it was a temporary measure at the time just like income tax was a temporary tax to cover some long forgotten war.

As the energy of a moving body is proportional to the square of its speed, it follows that, with other things being equal - which they never are; drive twice as fast and you are 4 times more dangerous. You also require four times the road space.

So by putting in speed limits the government can get more cars down a given length of road in a given time (as well as saving a significant amount of emissions & money for a bankrupt country.)

However there is a snail effect, because if all the cars were stationery, they can be really close together but are not going anywhere.
Ah here we are back on the M25.
There is a simple solution to all this - install number plate recognition cameras as well and send a serious amount of congestion charge to all vehicles failing to achieve an average speed of 15 MPH between its turn-on junction and the next but one junction. Motorists causing the congestion and wanting to avoid the charge could turn off at the next junction.
[Obviously there would have to be something to penalise motorists doing the trick of driving up one slip road, round the roundabout and straight down the next slip road back onto the M25 - Of course I have never done anything like what when approaching the Dartford crossing from either direction;)].
