M25 speed cameras: Junction 14?

On the M25 there are so many speed camera signs but no actual yellow speed cameras are there? As far as I know people can speed here without getting caught (when there are no police cars around).

On several occasions whilst driving on the M25 I have seen a speed camera flash at junction 14 anticlockwise. The camera is fixed inside the overhanging signs. I personally don't go over 70mph so I haven't got a speeding fine, but I asked some people who have gone through there above 70mph and seem to be fine.

There seems to be a camera there with working flash, but with no film.

Anyone else notice this too?

I think (but not sure) that they don't operate unless there is a variable speed limit in force at the time. So if those overhead barriers are showing a variable speed limit (in a red circle) then the cameras enforce that speed.

I always believed the cameras to only be active when the variable speed limits are in force too. Like Laverdyr, I can't say for sure if that's right or not but it's how I've always understood them to work.

    I use the M25 a lot.
I don't see why they need speed cameras.

    I usually do between nil & 40mph:mad:

  • The cameras are up on the gantries if they are there at all, I have occasionally seen flashing when travelling toward 14 anti clockwise on the clockwise side but as Mrse says the speed through there is nearer 4 MPH.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • There are cameras there, like said earlier, they are hidden in the overhead signs, but you can see them from the other carriageway. If you have a TomTom with speed camera warning, this is pretty accurate as the signs on the M25 are place at nearly all the overhead gantries on the South side. Also need to mention that they are only active when the variable speed limit is in force with just a 4mph allowance! I was reliably informed of this by a former Traffic Officer

They are also about to fit them to the newly widened 4 lane section round from the M40. I suspect as the widening continues all the way to the bridge so will the variable speed limit and cameras.

Indeed these cameras are part of the Highways Agency digital enforcement system (HADECS)and are installed on top of each gantry. The cameras are set to enforce anything as low as 10% (displayed speed) although are usually set to +10mph. The cameras are still operating when nothing is displayed although usually set to 100mph. The police can set them as low as 80mph.
