Quoted mpg figure v's actual mpg

I discovered a guy in a motoring magazine who does alot of test driving for some of the big companies, and gets record mpg's out of cars, he got something like 1100 miles out of a single tank on a seat ibiza 1.4tdi ecomotive, that's something like 70-80mpg, one of the things he says is to get it to between 2 & 3000rpm as quickly bit not harshly there, as when youre at that level the engine doesn't burn as much as it does with a slow climb to the same speed.
he also says things like not to accelerate on hills, choose a position for your foot on the accelerator and keep it at the same point all the way up, but obviously not to the point of stalling rather than go down a gear.
I found it very interesting.
I've found exactly the same. These high performace dieselswill use more fuel cruising below the peak torque point than they do above it.:TI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Would like to see how the new breed of super efficient deisels claimed figures compare to some real life figures.(eg Bluemotions, greenline, efficient dynamics, econetic etc)
I've the Passat 2.0TDI Bluemotion. Its combined is 57.6mpg. On my last complete fill i got 65.1 mpg overall via the trip computer. I checked it via the miles done / amount to refill to brim and it worked out at 62.5mpg. So theres about a 5% inaccuracy in the trip computer.
I can get an easy 950 miles to a tank of diesel (70 litres)
My driving is predominantly commuting (8 miles A roads, 15 miles motorway, 1 mile city) and weekend round town driving.
Best trip economy was yesterday morning - 85.1mpg on the 24 mile commute to work. Even allowing for the trip computer inaccuracy thats still 80+ mpg.
There have been some road tests done and my figures are pretty consistent with theirs. This one for example (on the estate version)

Their summary :-
Score 9/10
Verdict OMG! We got 75mpg from this car!
Impressive for such a big car with a 2.0 litre engine.0 -
There was a guy earlier in the thread with a Passat 2.0tdi bluemotion with good figures.
I'll give you a shout in a few months, I've just found out my new Golf Bluemotion has gone to Production today, woohoo:j
Your economy will be amazing - i think the golf's figures are something like 10mpg more than the passats.0 -
Well my calculations are complete and I can announce that my Smart ForTwo CDi is currently getting 70.5 miles per gallon...
Thats 7.66p per mile at current fuel rates.
That was mostly A-roads, a bit of town driving (from cold every morning) and a bit of Motorway too.
I can handle those figures.0
