Thanks all
Vickers
The walls had Silk emulsion prior to painting and I put Matt over it. There has been no wallpaper on the walls previous to this.
Reasons I've been told of possible causes are
second coat went on before first coat is dry....this was probably the case...about 3 hours
Matt doesn't like going on top of Silk
not having sufficient ventilation in the room
I've been told that there is a product called evenseal from B&Q that I can put on...I'm hoping this is the case otherwise its a sanding down job
Thanks for all the info0 -

I used Matt emulsion...I think the paint before that was Silk...maybe that has something to do with it?
Theres the culprit...., you have applied Matt over existing silk, did you sand down the old silk before you applied your paint? did you use straight from the can as well?0 -
misgrace
no I didn't sand it down...but I know now that I should have
poured it from the tin into a roller tray (after stirring)0 -
Ahh, thats why you have the crazing.
Silk needs to be sanded to take the shine off for the Matt to adhere to.
Also, when going over existing silk, you should always thin the matt first, about 15%, then with your second coat perhaps 5-10%.
You could go over the whole walls again, sanding them, paying more attention to crazing, then paint again with a thinner coat.0 -
thanks misgrace...guess what my weekend will be taken up with!
already bought the sandpaper0 -
A friend has offered me the use of a sander (rather than sanding it by hand)...I've never used one of these before...is it easy to use and is it a good idea on crazed paint walls? Thanks0

they are easy to use but can be very dusty.
dont wear your best suit.Get some gorm.0 -
Iknow its a case of after the horse has bolted but when painting over a shiny coating you need to give the walls a good rub down to provide a key for the following coats to adhere to ,sander would be ok but very messy ,a good rub down by hand would be just as good and keep mess down .0

I've painted over silk with matt several times without sanding down and had no problems at all.Just done it again with my sons room too and it looks great!
I had the crazy paving effect on my bedroom walls when I first moved in and it was awful, very very heavy crazy paving!Ended up rubbing it down to paintIf women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -
Hi again
Ok I'm in the middle of sanding down with a sander...the vast majority of the wall is still the same colour as I painted...just smooth with no crazed painting....however some bits have the previous silk paint showing through....how far do I have to sand down to? if I have to go right down to the plaster that will take some doing!!
once I've sanded down what is the next step?...is it just a matter of wiping down the walls with water or is sugar soap needed?
Thanks0
