No, that's just a myth.
They are sometimes accepted as payment, but this does not mean they are legal tender.
Legal tender actually means coins or notes that cannot be refused as payment for a court enforced debt.
(Actually, to be accurate, legal tender can be refused as payment for a court enforced debt, but if it is the debt can no longer be enforced as legal payment has been offered and refused).0 -
Such a simple question from the OP and such a variety of responses!! I love this site0

I used to work as a barmaid many moons ago - when beer was about a 85pa pint and one old guy always paid in coppers - I hated the sight of him!!! he always picked when the bar was really busy to get a refill and as he had about three refills he was the bane of my life - and I couldnt tell him to pay in proper money as the notice on bar said we only accepted copper up to £1! i wouldnt have minded so much if he had just dumped change on the bar and let me sort it for him - but he insisted on counting every penny slowly and carefully and sometimes would get to fifty and start all over again!
I was convinced he either hated me, the owner, the rest of the customers or it was his only source of entertainment as he was always sat on his own!0 -
If stamps were legal tender we would be buying them up before a price increase and sticking a fat wad in our bank accounts. They would quickly cease to be legal tender or the amount capped.0

we've used the self scan machines to get rid of shrapnel (1,2,5,10,20,p's etc) if there are two of you you just keep ramming the coins in fast and it's quite fun. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090

I have used the Coinstar machine in my local Morrisons once and was pleasently suprised to find I had over £8 ! The voucher I got didn't have to be used that day (although I did) and it was a huge help.
Mind you the self service tills sounds an excellent idea....although if there was a queue I would think twice !0 -
