When doing supermarket shopping I have noticed at both Tescos & Morrisons there are big change machines where people are emptying carrier bags full of coins into them.Do they get some kind of voucher payment to spend in store or can they get the voucher amount in cash?

they get a big coin £1 etc for the value of the cash, but it charges 10% commision ( i think), eg 110p to get a £10

You get a receipt with the amount on it (less something like 7% charge) and you can either cash it for cash at customer services, or use it like a voucher and have it knocked off your bill. At some supermarkets, you have to use it on the same date, so check the receipt (lesson learned here the hard way!).******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0

As nickhutch says, some you have to the receipt voucher the same day, but if you take the receipt voucher to the customer service desk, they will exchange it for a giftcard of the same amount.0

Yes do this from time to time, believe there is 7% charge. They are called CoinStar machines.:heart2::heart2::heart2: I LOVE MY BEAGLE! :heart2::heart2::heart2:0

Our local HSBC has one of these machines that pays the money straight into your account! Not sure if there is any charge though! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

Asda has one and you can exchange voucher for cash at Customer Services. 7% charge deducted from what you feed in. Easy way to get rid of coinage if you don't want to bag it up and take to bank. We use it prob twice a year0

there's a massive thread on HUKD about these machines & the 7% they deduct, and if you pay through the self service tills at Morrisons you can tip a few quids worth of coins in to pay for your shopping and avoid losing 7%. I tried it - I put in loads of 2p & 1p coins, more than the bill, and got change back in 20p coins0

I find these machines mad. It would wind me up to lose 7% of my cash just for someone to change it!
I like chalkysoil's suggestion.
I didn't realise they took 2p and 1p coins.
Could be annoying if there's a queue building behind you though! As of 24/11/2020

I used to use the machines and was not particularly bothered bout the commission as it beats faffing about bagging up coppers to take to the bank like I used to in the distant past. I would not use them for silver coins as I would keep these to spend on things like parking.
I hardly ever use cash to buy things these days and will generally use my card even to buy a paper of pint of milk, so the rate I accumulate coppers is now very slow.0 -
Have you ever tried depositing £100-worth of coins in bags at the bank? If they deign to accept them, and sometimes they won't in that sort of quantity, they really cop an attitude. And make you feel like an a-hole in front of the other customers0
