The machines in HSBC are free to use but can only be used by those with accounts at First Direct or HSBC."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

The banks will only change it into notes if it is bagged up into £1 or £5 bags of the same coinage. So to do this you have to wait a while before you have enough. Taking this weight of coinage onto a crowded bus can be both arm stretching and lethal fro those you are trying to get past.

my bank (natwest) has a new machine that takes unsorted coins in any quantity for no charge. you have to have an account there obviously but this could be a 'basic account' that most people are able to open regardless of credit status etc. the machine is quite new so i expect other banks are getting them now as well.
i've never used those coin machines in shops and now i'm glad - had no idea they charged 7% - what a total rip-off!"The Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed" - Ghandi0 -

no longer true in my bank at least- they have a new machine that takes any random mixture and amount of coins you have. i discovered this recently when i went in with all my neatly bagged up coins and had to open the bags and tip them all into the machine!"The Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed" - Ghandi0 -

Yes, they think of it as a way of saving. Some people save all the 1p and 2p coins they get, others save 5p coins too etc.
There's even a £2 coin challenge somewhere on here, every time you get a £2 coin you put it in a jar as savings.0
