  • Can you set it back to obtaining the DNS settings automatically then can you open a command prompt and type:

    >ipconfig /release
    >ipconfig /renew
    >ipconfig /flushdns
    >ipconfig /registerdns

I assume we've rebooted prior to this thread?

I tried the above but no change I'm afraid.

After typing all this in command prompt it said "Registration of the DNS resources for all the adapters of this computer has been initiated. Any errors will be reported in the Event Viewer in 15 minutes."

By typing http://66.102.9.105 Google page is still loading up, I'm sure there must be a way round this problem?

*Side issue, probably not related, but when I boot up Windows XP I get a winlogon.exe - Application Error message box which says:

The instruction at "0x7c918af2" referenced memory at "0x01cad327". The memory could not be "written."

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program

If I press OK or Cancel, it Restarts XP.

If it isn't related to this matter, I'm not too concerned about it at the moment.

to add to that, I've had similar problems with my firewall before now. Zone Alarm, problem disappears after a firewall restart or pc reboot though.

Would it not be easier for you to connect your pc to the router, and your brother's laptop to use wireless?

I'd like to know what it says if you type 'ping http://www.google.co.uk' to the command line and the you could try the same with the static IP-address.

I'd assume the first one would not work, cause of the DNS-problem. Second part should work just fine. This would give some additional information on the problem. Cheers

Has got no additional Firewall, only Microsofts one that comes with XP and I've disabled that but makes no difference.

Could something called a Winsock2 key be corrupted?

Would it be better for me to just reinstall Windows XP, could that solve the problem?

    Thanks

Your ipconfig gave the DNS server address as 192.168.0.1 where it should be your ISP's DNS servers (or something like Open DNS if that is your preference.)

Have you checked your router settings? I would only alter settings on my box if I wasn't using a router.

I use a Netgear router so, if it's anything like mine, hard wire into your router (i.e. ethernet not wireless) and type this into your browser address bar: (without gaps...)

    http: //192.168.0.1

You sould get a login prompt. Default settings as long as you haven't changed them are:

    Username: admin
    Password: password

Check the basic settings and make sure your router is set to receive IP address and DNS fron your ISP. Save your settings on the router and make sure your XP is set to receive network addresses automatically again (i.e. get rid of anything you've entered manually and set it to receive automatically.) Turn off everything and reboot in sequence i.e. modem - wait for it to sync, router then your pc.

    Try resetting winsock ~
    1. right click on the cmd prompt and open as administrator
    2. at the commend line type "netsh winsock reset"
    3. Reboot.
