You should write to them again and remind them of the European Court of Justice ruling in Dec 08 against Alitalia where European Court of Justice (ECJ) delivered good news for travellers. A passenger had claimed €250 from Alitalia after her flight from Vienna to Rome was cancelled due to a technical problem, causing her to miss a connection. The ECJ ruled technical problems are not of themselves "extraordinary"; there must be some other factor, for instance an act of sabotage or a widespread manufacturing fault.

After that you will have to go to the small claims court.

Yes, totally agree. I've successfully invoked the Alitalia case in a situation where the aircraft I was on had to return following an inflight fault.

If the airline messes you around, it may be more effective to bring this to the attention of the CAA, the body that oversees, among lots of other things, enforcement of EU directive compensation in the UK. They have the power to impose hefty fines on the airline if they feel the airline is trying to avoid compensation where it is due. This has to be done through the Air Transport Users Council (www.auc.org.uk).

The small claims court is an option, but more hassle in my view.
