Refused Alcohol from Tesco

  • Just a few weeks ago i was in spar buying a bottle of wine with my 13 yo dd in tow, the sales assistant asked for id for my obviously not 18 yr old daughter as according to her they have to id everyone in a group as "it's a new law"

i laughed and handed my car keys to my dd and told her to leave the shop and i was then sold the vino :rotfl:

i didnt argue with her as i was too busy laughing however if they had pushed the issue about my dd i would not have been happy, i can see the point when it is a group of teenagers as chances are they are going to share the drink but really there needs to be clearer guidelines for shop keepers/workers

I was asked for ID for my daughter when she was 14, and wearing her uniform. The SA just didn't get it when I said she wasn't 18 and that I wasn't trying to pretend she was. He was completely stumped! :rotfl:

If it bothers you enough then tell them you're not going to shop there any more, then just walk off and leave your (presumably unpaid for at this point) shopping behind and go somewhere else. Not good behaviour I know but if enough people do it then they might re-think their policy.

If it doesn't bother you enough to make you take your business elsewhere then.. well... it can't be that much of a problem for you can it?

It is all about common sense and the problem is a lot of people just will not sue it when selling alcohol due to local trading standards doing undercover operations. I think most of the main supermarkets have been in the press over the past year or so with both stores of them been threatened with having a store alcohol license removed and also for a store going OTT with checking ID. The issue is until the government give trading standards strict guidelines about who should be ID'd etc then the supermarkets will cover their own backs.

Where I work if someone is ID'd in a group and they leave we still will not sell the alcohol to the person who was with them even if they have ID, so in mad bad spender example she wouldn't have been allowed to buy the alcohol, but I would hope that it wouldn't happen in the first place unless the 13 year old was older looking, say 16/17. Think it also depends on what is been bought, who picks it up from the shelf, who puts it down at checkout etc

    Hi all

I produced my full driving licence at my local Tesco; however they refused to sell it to me. This is despite me showing my proper ID and I’m actually 21

I've produced a complaint letter and was wondering if anyone would mind tinkering with it to make it sound better? English and complaining isn’t my strong point. All posts welcome

    Dear Sir/Madam

I have always been a loyal shopper and always shop at Tesco where I can. Today, I went into your store in ******** London to purchase 8 cans of beer. I produced my Driving Licence card; however they refused to serve me even though I’m 21. I have purchased alcohol many times before from your stores and never had an issue. The customer service assistant called the Manager/ Supervisor to help. I produced other ID that I had in my Wallet such as Debt Card, Student ID and my Rail Staff Identity Card.

    Reasons they gave were

    1. The picture cut off my ear.
    2. My middle name wasn't on the driving Licence

With regards to point number one, I sent the DVLA a full size picture of myself when I sent off for the card in July 2007 however they ended up cropping the picture. I have the picture to hand if you wish to see the full picture.

Point number 2, I searched the DVLA website and found no evidence that any middle name is required on the Licence.

I was disgusted with how they treated me as a loyal customer and refusing to serve me. I totally understand that your staff have check ID thoroughly, but getting denied was embarrassing and frustrating.

I look forward to your reply

    What the hell???????

How the fig do they know that you even have a middle name?! I don't have one.

Bloody stupid jobsworths, honestly, some people need a good crack.

What if they don't have ID, but you know they are over 18, because you went to school with them or work with them (both of which scenarios I have come across)?

It's because for all they know, she's buying the alcohol for you.

Can we ask a sales assistant for ID and refuse to complete the purchase if they don't have any?

Yeah what are you going to do if they say "no, what are you going to do now then?" ?

Interesting thought. After all, what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

If they cannot or will not produce suitable ID, you have reasonable cause to suppose that a breach of the stores liquor license has taken place.

    It cuts both ways.

I'm 19 and got asked for I.D to buy a lottery ticket!!!! Yet when I have gone into Tesco's/Sainsburys/Off Licenses etc. They rarely ask me for I.D I would say probably 1 out of 10 times.
