As a manager in the construction industry, dealing with asbestos disposal regularly, I can tell you the following:

There is absolutely NO NEED to remove asbestos soffit boards. In fact, the HSE recommends that they are left where they are.

They are commonly used by purchasers' Solicitors as a way of scamming the house price down - an action which is nothing less than fraudulent.

Leave them where they are. They will probably last longer than the rest of the house and should require NO maintenance in the life of a house.

They were in common use until the use of asbestos cement boards was finally banned in November 1999, a ban that, in the case of this type of material (unlike blue and brown asbestos), was put in place due to the hazards in the manufacturing, installation and demolition processes and not the end use.

If you REALLY want to do something with them, have them covered up with pvc.

Their are millions of tonnes of asbestos cement boards in the UK. Almost without exception, it is in every modern building constructed before November 1999.

The asbestos in these boards is in the form of long strands, used as a reinforcement fibre. Think of the bristles in a paintbrush and then try inhaling something that size....

This type of asbestos is only a controlled waste when it comes to disposal, so that all asbestos materials go to specific licenced landfill sites, where it will be left undisturbed. Ordinary landfill sites may be re-excavated or reprofiled in the future, whereas asbestos landfill sites should not.
