  • I have a Classic account with Lloyds TSB.. They won't give me a Cheque Book yet and although I do have the lovely Debit Card that starts with 4921 I doubt mine is the "Offline" type for some reason... ;)

Every transaction I make the balance goes down staright away but it takes 3/4 days to appear on the statement..

But saying that, my partner has a Classic account with Debit Card/CGC but the balance on that also reduces straight away and the transactions again appear on the statements within 3/4 days.

Do you think once the Cheque Guarantee scheme fully closes there won't be any need for Offline Cards as such? Will the banks just start to give Full Auth cards out to everyone regardless of inhouse credit scores?

Unfortunately although most places do have access to the internet or a phone line some places it is incredibly difficult/impossible/expensive for example on a plane or train which means that without the ability to verify transactions they would be unable to take card payments.
  • Sorry to resurrect this thread but I just got the Lloyds TSB gold account and I tried using it at a pay pump and it was declined. My son who is 16 tried using his and it went through :o

How the hell does that work?

See top of thread, you need to find out from the bank if your card has a "Positive Authorization Mandatory (X2X) Service Code".
The codes normally appear as AID on till receipts. Third digit from the end.

Think my Lloyds one is an offline card after all. Used it in Tescos on Friday, & they had to swipe it because the chip & pin machine was broke - it still hasn't come out of the account.
In emergency, Tesco will have to take a chance. Strictly, this might be at their own risk. But the bank can still pay out the money and put the account overdrawn, if it likes, even if it's a basic account. They're not likely to refuse unless the retailer is abusing the system.

The AID is the "Application ID", i.e. Visa Credit/Visa Debit/Mastercard Credit/Mastercard Debit, it is not the same things as the postive authorisation code I'm afraid (only debit cards have this code). Only way to find out the code is to ask the bank or to buy a chip reader, crack the encryption and find what is called "the tag".

With reagrd to Tesco, the transaction could well have still been authorised. If the system went down completely for obtaining authorisation by computer then if it is not referred by telephone it is at the retailers risk.

I can see your son getting into a lot of trouble with this debit card.

I'm not too worried. He has his own online website making business and has made about £8000 in 2 months. (Earns more than me atm). Still though.

How can you really tell with Lloyds cards if their online or offline cards?

Hes does alot for 16 year old !!!! I trust its all be declared to the inland revenue. If it worked in a pay pump the card will be offline. Can I ask what is your infatuation with debit cards?

Well tbh I just find it stupid. A bank should just be able to tell you if your card is an offline and online card. It would be nice to know if your card is actually going to be accepted.

I end up always using my credit card because of it.
