I need help!! Paypal Scam!!

I was the victim of a Scam yesterday and paypal took about 2hrs to carry out an investigation that should take at least 10-20hrs! Guess what? Not in my favour.

Here are the details, I sent this to paypal. I

Ebay Sale.

Squantoreal (me) Sold Item to Mattys18. Mattys18 paid via paypal then arranged a collection in person as per listing. Paypal Transaction 4x83859ME93852505.

Buyer turned up to collect, and provided ID the same as that off the paypal account holder. Goods where given over and signed for. When individual left property, transaction reversed and property stolen.

Matter reported to Hertfordshire Police, awaiting their response.

I have been the victim of a Scam/fraud.

within the current dispute, I cannot resolve the issue. I do not intend to pay the money back into my paypal account.

I am VERY concerned about an obvious flaw within paypals system.

Should you not be able to recover the costs from buyer, I do not intend to pay them. Please be aware that I am a victim in this case.

I also must inform you that I am a Sergeant in the Metropolitan Police London. The reason that I am obliged to tell you this is if this issue develops into a civil dispute, I am legally obliged to inform you of this.

I managed to withdraw the money to my account prior to ebay freezing or reversing the funds from my account. The paypal account is not £-192.

I simply will not pay this back to them. This matter must, if they want the money, go to court and be heard by a judge.

It wont go to court with Paypal.

They will sell your debt to a debt collection agency.

    It will increase.

The DCA will hound you until it is paid.

    Paypal will not care.

It's a popular scam, and paypal alledgedly sell the debts on. The usual response is it's in the t&c's when you open a paypal account, but I don't know if anyone has actually challenged them in court. The other problem could be a hacked account, in which case the "buyer" is an innocent bystander, and an unknown third party has your goods.
Good luck, if you do take paypal to court keep us posted.

I always collect in person if I can, and always pay cash if I can.

I hope that you are able to challenge the decision & it finds in your favour.
If it's something big or fragile then often it's only going to be local buyers as the cost of transporting makes things too expensive.
The problem is having to offer Paypal on all transactions, you should be able to opt out of offering Paypal if it is truly a collection only item.

You were more a victim of not understanding how paypal works. Paypal is not set up in reality for collection items. If you don't repay the balance you will never be able to buy or sell on ebay again. which may be fine but a few years down the line your views may be different. We do have people post trying to open accounts years after incidents like this.Paypal will pass the debt to agencies who will chase you for the debt.

Also for someone selling high price items you would have thought you would have done some basic research on the best way to protect yourself. Your not exactly new to ebay.

A very expensive lesson that could have easily been avoided with a little look at Paypals seller and buyer protection policies

You and every other internet user when push comes to shove. :rotfl:

Why do you need to "inform" us of this- we're just some randomers on the internet.

If you genuinely are then I'm surprised you fell for such a obvious scam.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

    What's your collar number?

And if you say "I'm not telling you", you've got no choice, you have to give it out when requested.

Why report it to Hertfordshire Police, instead of sorting it yourself?

Also "This item cannot be posted as it is heavy!". Yeah, whatever. 360s weight... what, 4kg. Add in the games, you've got another 1kg a most. Parcel Force will take that easily. And you've have got a tracing number to give to Paypal.

You saved £15, and it cost you nearly £200. Maybe you'll read about Paypal's buyer protection before taking it to court (good luck with that, by the way. Civil matter, not legal one).
    Lesson learned, I'd say.
Back on MSE after a 5 year hiatus.

    He's not "informing" you.

What he has posted is what he's told Paypal, isn't it?
