    Emulsion or gloss paint?

Get as much as you can up using a scraper (dustpan half of a dustpan and brush set would be good for this). Then use plenty of soapy warm water.

You might need to change the water several times.

Then use an old towel to soak up the moisture out of the carpet.

    Good luck!

If you have Accidental Cover on your Contents Insurance, this will cover you for a new carpet.

Can't believe this! Exactly the same happened to my son last night. GS was chasing GD and knocked over a brand new unopened tin of Dulux white emulsion (the sort that goes on pink and changes to white when dry). Darn lid came off and emptied the contents all over the hall carpet, both school uniforms etc. D-i-l wasn't in and son panicked, got out the Vax and sucked it up , d-i-l not a happy bunny when she came home!

Insurance has an excess of £100 and as it is h/s/l carpet they would probably only replace the hall bit, which now can't be matched as it's been down a few years. They're thinking of contacting Dulux as surely the lid shouldn't have popped off a brand new unopened tin when it was knocked over by two kids chasing each other and it was standing on carpet at the time not dropped from a great height onto a solid floor.
  • Sold carpet for a while, and involved in many a claim for damage. If a claim is deemed valid for the hall, the stairs and landing will be replaced as well. This is because there is no door bar separating the damaged area from the undamaged area.

On a side note you'd be amazed at how bouncy a tin of paint can be, down the stairs, round the corner, round the next corner, and onto the lounge carpet was always a favorite. Irons - wow they can move! I'm surprised how many people do their ironing on the landing, and the way the iron can sit just long enough on a couple of stairs to melt the carpet is uncanny, and yet still manage to keep going into the hallway, and sometimes the lounge! Of course I'm not for one moment sugesting fraud was involved -oh no!
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%

Thank you Paul, I'll pass that onto my son and d-i-l.

Can I ask, in your opinion should the top of a new, unopened tin come off so easily? Could there be a fault with the way the tin was sealed?

Any paint can that I have been involved with was always difficult to open. Even the cans mixed in the shop are replaced using small spring clips to hold the lid on.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
