You're just not trying hard enough!!
Thanks to everyone for their advice. I've never been afraid of buying stuff second hand - most of the stuff my mum used for me when I was little were hand me downs from my dads cousins - I was a bit concerned that I didn't know anyone who had recently had a baby, but I'd never thought of Ebay (DH doesn't let me on it after some shoe purchases...;) ) and have never heard of Freecycle. Am def going to check it out!! Think will wait for a while before getting any ovulation kits and see ifwe can just relax and maybe drop lucky/ I had no idea that the 3 month pill thing was a muth - might see if I can tempt him upstairs - might involve moving the playstation tho... :rotfl:Lightbulb Moment: January 2006

someone at work told me that if you want a girl then around the ninth day of the cycle is important and anything after twelfth day leads to a boy!! it might sound like rubbish old wives tales but i really wanted two little girls and it appeared to work for me i'll never know for sure if the ninth day is for a girl so please test the theory and get back to me!!0

It depends on lengh of your cycle and when you ovulate in it - some ovulate just after a period, some in the middle, and some just before a period!
The idea is male sperms go charging ahead, then run out of energy and die quickly. Female sperms take longer to get there, but have more energy to live longer inside of you. For a girl, you need to time sex with just before you ovulate, so the male sperms have all died, but the female ones are all there waiting for the egg as it comes out! Here I go again on my own....0 -
I may be wrong but I understood that ovulation is always 14 days before your next period. The variation is in the length of time from the previous period to when you ovulate. If you have a 28 day cycle then you ovulate on day 14 but if you have a 42 day cycle then you ovulate on day 28. Unless you are regular or have some method of detection then you don't actually know when you ovulated until the next period. This is why due dates are often wrong as they base it on a 28 day cycle. I'm not saying I'm definitely right but this is what I've read.Becles wrote:It depends on lengh of your cycle and when you ovulate in it - some ovulate just after a period, some in the middle, and some just before a period!0 -
Hi there. Congrats on deciding to start! I think you ovulate 14 days after the first day of your last period. I got pregnant first time with all three of mine and one of them times I had just had the coil out! You should be able to feel yourself ovulating. It feels like a small cramp in the middle of cycle? Or is that just me?!
Go to the January sales for everything. Look in big toy shops ie smyths etc for cots etc. I paid £50 deposit on mine in November 04 for a £150 cot that had been reduced to £100. After xmas when I went to pick it up it had been reduced to £50! So I had nothing to pay! A good mattress is also good. My 3 have slept since they were 8 weeks old all night every night. I have never had a problem with their sleep. Its the best time to get baby things so have a good hunt around.
You dont need to spend a fortune on a pram either. You can get a good travel system or get separately. I think separately would probably be cheaper. Baby grows etc are reasonably cheap anyway so it doesnt really matter where you get them. See if you can find muslim cloths for burping etc as I found these really useful.(my ds had a bad reflux).
Travel cot is a good idea if the baby is going to be staying at relatives to give you a bit of a break! When you get due date remember to think about summer/winter as you will need warmer clothes for winter and not so much for summer. I used disposable nappies. I had enough work with the children never mind another mountain of washing however I think you can maybe get terry ones now that are just like a pair of pants?? So no pins etc needed?? Dont quote me on that!
Wouldnt advise getting them snazzy electric rocking chairs as you dont really want to start rocking your child to sleep after they are too big for it as my friend is currently doing!! Make sure you remember folic acid. Start taking it now. You will probably find you will get an awful lot of pressies as well which will help you out so if there are people you feel you can ask what they are getting you, do, so you wont duplicate it.
Happy practising!!

At the minute, my cycle is 28-32 days, but I'm ovulating around day 7-9.Here I go again on my own....0 -
I think that'd I'd be happy with either a boy or a girl - although I'm sure that DH would prefer a boy. Twins run in my family, so he might get more than he bargained for!!
i have no idea at all about the length of my cycle - I've been on the pill since I was 14 because my periods were always heavy, painful and irregular. Looks as though it's just going to be a pot luck thing. Thanks for the tip about the January sales. We don't have any childrens shop here except for Mothercare, but the town just over from us has two or three so I might head over there. I had a look on Freecycle - the one in our area has only been going for about a month and seems to be mainly people shifting beds and tv tables, but will keep an eye out.
Good luck to everyone who is trying - I wonder who'll be the first.... :rotfl:Lightbulb Moment: January 2006
