Well don't forget a £30 a month contract for 12 months costs the same over the length as a £20 a month for 18 months and a £15 a month contract for 24 months. Food for thought :)

Exactly, I had an 18month £35 contract - total £630 over the life of the contract. I've now moved to a £10 a month 24month contract - with free net and texts. Cost of phone £160, total £400!

    That's moneysaving

TBH, we will all have a mobile phone contract of some sort for the rest of our lives, and most people only swap and change to get the latest phone "free".

As many current phones do as much as they will ever do, it may be worth while getting a good cheap SIM only deal, and then keeping an existing phone, or buying a phone SIM-free (or a PAYG unlocked one) when their prices drop when new models come out

    This is not true.

12 month contracts are still available but only if asked for, and then only if your prepared to get a rather pathetic deal.

they will not actively promote them, and staff are loathe to offer them as they are rather poor in comparison to 18/24.

Unfortunatly thats the way things are going, in fact decent priced (over the total term of the contract) 18 month contracts are getting rarer too.

You can get a 30 day contract but will have to pay more for a phone.

Blame the EU, they forced European roaming charges down and more or less the same time most mobileco's decided to drop 12 month contracts. Mobileco's are a business they need to make a profit, and by the EU limiting the more lucrative (or rip off depending on your point of view) ways of charging such as roaming then subscribers have to cough up somewhere else. Dropping 12 month contracts may not be directly related but the timing suggests it is related.

Or pay full price for the phone and get on a 30 day contract. Ultimately I think that is how it will be. 36 month contracts if you want a cheap phone and 30 day contract if you are prepared to pay full price for it.

I'm sticking with my 30-day roller now. Going to buy my handset outright (HTC Desire £349.99 or £341.99 with cashback). Still works out £40 cheaper doing it that way, with much much lower monthly bills and a better tariff. No brainer.
