Orange only offering 18 month contracts from 31st March
Options
I've just phoned Orange as I'm coming to the end of my contract to upgrade my phone staying on the same plan (racoon) and asked for a 12 month contract. They said they they no longer offer 12 month contracts. I don't want to be tied in for 18 months - what can I do?

Unfortunatly thats the way things are going, in fact decent priced (over the total term of the contract) 18 month contracts are getting rarer too.
You can get a 30 day contract but will have to pay more for a phone.
Blame the EU, they forced European roaming charges down and more or less the same time most mobileco's decided to drop 12 month contracts. Mobileco's are a business they need to make a profit, and by the EU limiting the more lucrative (or rip off depending on your point of view) ways of charging such as roaming then subscribers have to cough up somewhere else. Dropping 12 month contracts may not be directly related but the timing suggests it is related.0 -
Networks are also looking at phasing out 18 month contracts over the next year and only have 24-32 month contracts.0

Who in their right mind would sign up for a 32 month contract?Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

36 * but yes - they're pushing for longer contracts.
O2 have had 36s on their billing system for a while now - never seen them actually used though.0 -
It's also not true. I just got a 12 month contract on Orange (via a dealer naturally) in April.0

Do you really need an upgrade? If not just stay on Orange OOC.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Well don't forget a £30 a month contract for 12 months costs the same over the length as a £20 a month for 18 months and a £15 a month contract for 24 months. Food for thought0
