Have you thought about buying an alarm clock, and then taking your handset into a Vodafone store for a firmware flash? It'll have to be sent away, which will be a pain, but at least yo're getting towards a replacement (andf a trail on their system that you are having problems) - upgrading the firmware yourself wont prove to Vodafone that it's been done,

If it's been flashed using anything other than Vodafones approved firmware, of you'd have to hack / jailbreak (I know it's not an iPhone but you get my drift) / fix the phone to do it in any way in order to get the replacment firmware on the Vodafone will most likely detect this and reject any repair as tampering has occured.

Been there, done that, had a repair rejected, luckily 2 months from the end of my contract...
