We just have different priorities, still not answered my question about children in Africa,to love cats you must be a kind person ,just perhaps a little focused, please do not take my comments personaly.I just feel that we should not try to project our human feelings upon animals,I could produce a healthy ,glossy coated long living cat fed on non-organic food ,can you dispute that ,just trying to save you money ,that is what this site is about ,because if you buy organic food for cats you are being ripped off. What do the RSPCA feed their cats on ,non-organic food ,rest my case, please save money
Meeting the nutritional requirements of a pet is not anthropomorphic! Burns is not organic food, but it does not contain all the rubbish you find in many of the commercial brands. IMO, in the long run, prevention of digetive and skin complaints through educated feeding will save money on vets bills!

Bringing African children into the argument is irrelevant. You could just as well say "you could give the money you save to your local animal shelter". However, I rehomed my dog from a rescue home, and intend to give her the best I can. I know your question about African children was not aimed at me, but I'll answer it anyway. Be it right or wrong, if it was a choice between my dog (who is part of my family and to whom I am emotionally attached), or an African child (who I do not know and to whom I am not emotionally attached), I would pick my dog.

The RSPCA and other animal welfare organisations are rescuing animals and (in most cases) trying to save their lives. Of course, feeding whatever is available for a short period of time whilst they are rehabilitated and rehomed will not do any long term damage!

This site is about money saving, be it energy prices, food prices, or pet care. It isn't about what individuals think is the right/wrong way to live!

I use Burns cat food and it is fab. If you email the guys at Burns they may be able to send you a trial sample. My cats adore both varieties, never bore of it and it works out much better price wise then buying the boxes of biscuits from the supermarket.

They have a great service too, I always order direct as they deliver to my door! I like companies that do that for me :)

I was looking at James wellbeloved then found out it is owned by Mars who take part in animal expeiments. EEk ! James Wellbeloved and animal testing I have decided to with Burns as they are on the list of the pet food companies who dont support animal testing. So I will probably orde direct as my local farmshop does not sell burns only wellbeloved. Its terrbile what you find out, before I read this thread I never dreamt that pet food companies did animal testing and experimentstion .Burns is also the best priced and about the same price as Iams but more nutricious .

Please love and care for your animals, but they can be healthy on a variety of foods, why waste money on expensive brands, but of course that is your choice,what-ever you feed them on they will always give you their affection

These seem to be the most ethical on this site
  • I've found that the "Pets at home" range is very good. They use very high quality ingredients & are all guaranteed GM free. I use the range for my dog who had a very sensitive digestion. She loves it & looks great now.
They also do a wide range for cats, also of the same high quality & very good value for money.

Thank you for that, I knew there was a reason why I wouldn't use James Wellbeloved, but couldn't find the thread that instigated my research so thought I'd better not negatively remark on them. But yes that was the reason, it was in an IAMS discussion and Curry Queen was very informative on all accounts of these. JW is also the new choice of the vets practises, like IAMS once was....I like Burns as they aren't tied to anything. Hope your kitties like it, they do suggest introducing it slowly to them, although mine took to it very quickly!!!

Cats have specific nutritional requirements, just the same as any other species. :) Humans have chosen to breed and domesticate cats, and keep them as pets, and therefore as pet owners, we have a responsibility to meet their needs. Would you suggest that someone who owned a cat that was subsequently ill through a nutritional deficiency did not 'waste their money' and take it to the vet?! :rolleyes2

Animals only need basic food requirments, im not saying feed it nothing im saying the food you feed it does not need to be expensive as the cat wont care. we are not talking about limiting the nutritional intake of the cat only not to use food which is over priced and will not benifit the cat in any great deal. as this is a MONEY SAVING website then the feeding the cat for a good price should be the goal, it is not a cat lovers web site i think you should google the words cat, lover and stupid to find that web site!

I don't think the OP deliberately wants to feed an expensive cat food, just one which is green/ethical (as this is the board she's chosen). After all, if she believes in organic food, the best way to support it is to vote with your wallet! Wanting the best for her cat doesn't mean she doesn't care about people, after all. I don't think there's really any need for the level of criticism she's received; while this may be a moneysaving board, that doesn't mean that cheap is always the best way to go.
FWIW, my cat seems to like Wellbeloved and Burns, but wouldn't touch the Nutro samples - I think he doesn't like chicken flavour food though, so YMMV.

  • this board should be about feeding the cat for a good price not organic, unless organic is cheap! and as we all know organic is usually of a higher price than normal food then we can sure that it wont be money saving and so people will say that it does not make sense to feed a cat organic food on a MONEY SAVING website and yes people will also say the money could be spent better on other things as many people see animals and not as important as humans for example!
