I am wondering if that means I can simply swap 2 tbs of butter for olive/sunflower oil or if I would need to use a bit less.

I'd swap an equal quantity ;) You can leave the fat out altogether; it's there to improve the keeping qualities of the bread.

Yes, it'll be fine - I always use olive oil, I don't measure it - just glug a bit in and there's never any problem.
My mum makes it without any fat and that tastes fine too.

keep in mind you can taste the oil, and nice oil makes nice bread generally. I almost always use oil as we don't generally eat butter.

I make the pizza dough in the panny, and that recipe uses olive oil instead of butter - I have used the dough to make rolls before and they were grand!! I think you should give it a go and see how it turns out!!

You could use yummy oils for a bit of variety - walnut oil, chilli oil, truffle oil.... yum yum!!

Just to second whats been said above. When I first got my panasonic I left the butter out by mistake and it tasted fine! I carried on doing this for a couple of months until the novelty of fresh new bread was less (i.e there was still some left after a couple of hours!) then realised that it helps keep it fresher, so now a use a slodge of olive oil, which is more than fine.

Hope that your OH adjusts to his non-dairy diet easily.

I always use oil, 1 and 1/2 of the tbsp (measuring spoon they give you) for the small load, and 2.5 tbsp for the medium and large, remember to reduce the liquid though by the same amount. ie take out 2.5tbsp out of the water. I also use honey instead of sugar and again take out the same amount in liquid.

    I also have the Panasonic

All the bread receipes in my breadmaker book use oil instead of butter - never knew you could use butter, lol.
  • I use whatever oil I have in - sunflower and corn oil make lovely light bread
Not keen on olive oil so rarely have it in the house.
Butter is best used for enriched doughs (The ones that have egg etc in them) but I have used oil in the past with no problem in the results.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I have a panasonic and always use oil instead of the butter in the recipes. It does say how much to swap for so i'll have a look tonight and post.

With regard to the powdered milk I think you can just use water. Before the panasonic my old (kenwood I think) bread maker recipes would require powdered milk, the panasonic ones just use water.

I've found that too that oil make the bread last (feel/taste fresher) longer.. longer than using butter.
