Why shouldn't I vote lib dem?

Seriously.

I don't know too much about them....maybe this is a reason I should not be voting! But, this thread is for that purpose, to tell me why I should not vote for them.

My reasons for swaying towards voting for them (pretty much secured my vote)

1. They seem far more honest that the other two parties. Not completely honest I have no doubt, but seem more honest.

2. Have actually said what they will cut....and I like what they will cut.

3. Vince Cable.

4. Would like to see them have a chance. How badly can they really screw up? Labour screw up massively it seems each time they have the chance. Tories never seem to get anywhere as they keep on getting handed a poisoned chalice. Lib Dems just sit on the sidelines, making, what seems, decent, sound, suggestions.

So my question is, why are they 3rd runners all the time? What is making other people opt for other parties? What am I missing?

I would also be interested in replies to this thread. I'd vote for them purely on number 3!

I see you fell for that one Dev. LibDems could hold the balance of power come June, no deals without PR.

    I didn't fall for it.

It's my opinion based on what I have seen from the past few decades.

I have come to the conclusion that I will vote Lib Dem, because

    - George Osborne lacks all credibility
    - I have some misgivings about how the Tories would govern
    - Lib Dems have the sage of York (Vince Cable) who is the only political figure who really understands the economic issues at hand (even Alastair Darling who I had a bit of kudos for said he didn't think the housing market growth had played much part in the banking crisis and that Northern Rock was a "normal" bank... as if)

I think the Lib Dems come third because they have the most progressive policies (on crime, drugs and immigration) and the UK is actually quite a socially conservative country. There's also the "wasted vote" argument.

Like the only reason why Labour fans support Labour is to 'blame Maggie', the LibDems have had some terrible leaders and some terrible economic proposals over the years as well as legalising drugs, etc. Not voter happy stuff.

Locally, I've generally voted LibDem (and historically, Socialist Alliance!), but Nationally was a different kettle of fish - I always went with which policies suited me at that time so have voted for all the three main parties in my lifetime (not at the same election I must add).

I don't hear much from the LibDems on the economy. They are good at rebuffing Labour plans (and Tory plans too), but are short on the detail themselves. Whilst Vince is a good man, he alone cannot carry the party and I seriously cannot think of ANYONE else in the LibDems bar Clegg himself....but if they can get their message heard then who knows?

Totally agree there. Couldn't quite believe he said that.

And you have picked up on the wasted vote thing, which I forgot about.

Right at the end of the chancellors show, Osbourne said "no disrespect Vince, but you have no chance, it's between labour and conservative" (or along those lines). That just made me want to vote lib dems even more, hence this thread.

It's because of history; prior to the first world war, the Liberals were the leading party, with labour nowhere. The liberals were responsible for World War I, and reaped the result... liberal politics became so deeply discredited that it has taken two generations for people to forget how badly they messed up.

Even though that's no longer a deciding factor, our voting system means it would take a pretty revolutionary result for them to gain power... it is unlikely to happen.

The Lib dems have taken over from old Labour as the left wing party, they tend to come up with gimmicky policies like the penny on income tax. I thought Nick Cleggs budget speech was terrible, borimg as hell. My main problem with them is they have little or no tallent amongst them and wouldn't trust them with the economy even if I believed their intentions to be noble.
