I'm one of those who have flown VS LGW to LAS a couple of times and wouldn't do it again. The old planes and the stag groups who are allowed to board legless are the main reasons.

Like Ferf the free booze isn't an issue one way or the other to me (although given the choice I prefer not to fly with people who think they MUST drink the plane dry just because it's free !) I've not even considered the (more expensive) BA option as I think there is little benefit in flying direct. I like flying indirect and clearing customs and immigration before I get to Vegas so I don't have to stand in line once I've arrived to clear. The inflight internet is for me a plus on the domestic sectors and I find the seats more comfortable on both Delta and AA. I also liked Continental.
I arrived back today from Vegas-had a great flight flew back into Heathrow but chose to fly out from Gatwick.
Another plus point with the US carriers is as the passengers are more US than UK passport holders.....queues at immigration at both ends are shorter.

It's also worth mentioning that your chances of being delayed are more or less double on an indirect flight. Perhaps we were unlucky, but when we flew US airways indirect last year to Vegas BOTH legs were delayed. It took us near on 24 hours to get to Vegas. We lost a day of our holiday and obviously, we were shattered. Clearly, this may not happen - everything may run like clockwork and the direct flight may itself be delayed - but we're reducing the risk of that this time and flying Virgin direct.

Lets face it - flights are not the most enjoyable thing whoever you fly with. You just want to get there so in my opinion, proving the price is cheap, get me there as quickly as possible!

The other side of that is with Virgin if your flight is cancelled your options for getting there are more limited.
Friends I travelled with last year were on Virgin-the flight was cancelled (admitedly rare but it does happen) and Virgin couldn't fly them home for another two days. Hotel was paid for by Virgin but both were due back at work and simply couldn't do it so had annoyed employers and lost money as they had no paid holiday left to take
There are a lot more options with indirect-for example AA could route you through New York, Dallas, Los Angeles or Chicago-Delta through New York , Atlanta or Minneapolis.
