I did mine with an old video player connected to the TV card in my PC , think I used windows movie maker (free in XP)
then I used this
http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-DVD-Video-Converter.htm
to convert to DVD format
if you download the full package
Free Studio 4.3.6.79 Download (30.00 Mb) | Overview
it will start the burner as soon as its finished to put it on DVD
if needed it includes this free video editor
http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-Video-Dub.htm
Supported OS:
Windows XP/Vista/7
Description
The fastest way to edit AVI (DivX, Xvid, MPEG 4), MPEG 1 and 2 video!
Free Video Dub is a free video editing software which lets you delete unwanted parts from video files without re-encoding.
And "without re-encoding" means without loosing original quality!!! This is lossless video editing, which is very fast.
Supports many MPEG files: MPEG 1, MPEG 2 and even MPEG 4 AVI, MOV, MP4 (MPEG 4), M4V, MPG and FLV files including DivX and XviD.Ex forum ambassador

If you don't have a video input on your graphics card, or a tv card with the same feature, then you'll need one of these (USB Video in adapter) http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=GT-EASYCAP&af=50 Widely available for less than £15.
Plus you'll most likely need a Scart to Phono lead to connect up to it, like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Video-SCART-cable-Phono-Leads/dp/B000Q8FSJE/ref=pd_cp_ce_30 -
thanks everyone, will get those and give it a go...

I have used this and as the good reviews suggest, it was quite pleasant and straightforward to use with good outcome and very easy editing options.

Hope it helps.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -
I assume you already have a VHS player to go with the tapes?
Buy a DVD recorder. Connect these two with a SCART lead. If you already have a VHS player and dvd recorder, all you need is the lead.
Play the tape, select the AV input on the DVD recorder, press record.
Job done. No computers, no software needed.
Or; buy an all-in-one VHS and DVD machine.0 -
