The front of my house has windows with top openers and big glass bottom piece. If I have to put in an odd window then I`ll not bother as it will not look right. Our other windows have only been in 4 years so there is no chance of me changing them. Because of the size of the new one I don`t think they could do a bottom opener for the whole thing so as to keep all windows same shape.0

Bottom line is get the building officer in to have a look and see what needs to be done for it to meet regs surely?
Sunshine, you are correct. My comments weren't aimed at you, I apologuise, , but there was some rubbish advise earlier, I did miss yours.
The OP needs to accept that an escape window does need to be provided as we have now both expressed, no offence intended,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Just had another thought, could get a door put in as there is an outside wall. Could keep windows the same then. Any ideas do you think this might work? seems logical but might need special kind of door? Thanks0

Putting in a door would get rid of the need to have a 450 opener for escape purposes so you could keep your current window design and install an additional door or a single 450 opener on another elevation if that was practical.
After all, nobody would climb out of a window when a perfectly good door was available. Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0 -
Thanks, I think the door might work. At least I can keep my windows the same, silly me had not thought of side window (it would have to be frosted as looking straight onto shed and bins) Anyone know the smallest size window you could have as a fire escape? Thanks again.0

Exactly, I did try to post that earlier but, what the..........
The door has to be the best option,;)

Size of the window is irrelevant, as long as there is a 450x450mm opening section as a minimum. That is to say you could have a 450sq opening like some kind of porthole (in my opinion this wouldn't look good ast all). To get the proportions right i think you would be looking at something like a 450mm wide plus frame (usually about 40mm each side so say 530mm wide) by 600-650 high. That would give you a window of reasonable shape but you can go bigger or a touch smaller if you wanted. Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0 -

Apologies, I only skimmed the first few posts and then the last few.
As cyclonebr1l has said. The door is the best option as it not only provides your fire escape but it will also become invaluable for access after a whileSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0 -
Brilliant thanks, another option. It wouldn`t take up too much wall space. Decided not to think about this now till after the weekend as am getting knickers in a knott with it all. If only life was straighforward..then I suppose we`d all be bored.0
