Cement screed will be warmer more so with underfloor heating, as for cement pricing i have no idea, however it is usually bought and delivered by the cubic metre and prices will vary. Price to will offcourse depend on how big a hole needs filling in.Norn Iron Club member No 3530

i would personally go for the wooden I beams to raise the floor,we use these all the time now and are cheaper lighter and easier to fit than conventional wooden floor joists,i would then use rigid insulation between the joists to give you the required R value for building regs,on top of that you have a couple of choices, you could put the real wooden floor planks down the ones that are allready finished and sealed directly on top of the joists,or just your standard tounge and groove chipboard flooring.
remember as well most garage outside walls are only single skin, these will need
coated with some kind of bitumen water sealer on the inside, then a 3x2 stud wall built against the outside walls so you can insulate these walls prior to plaster boarding to meet the building regs and for the inspecter to sign off on the conversion.0 -
Sorry to be a little ignorant but what the difference between wooden I beams and conventional joist? I'm really not DIY/building minded.....0

Do you require permissions from planning dept. Some areas do, my friend was told he would have to have a concrete floor, DPC, insulation etc. There is also a third way with flooring and that is concrete block and beam.0

Thanks for the advice stephen25uk, our garage is integral and the one outside wall has the dining room behind it and daughters bedroom above it, will it not be brick and breeze block. Or do they just leave the garage part single skin. I appreciate if this sounds a bit dim but the more info I can get the better..then I know what I should be getting rather than what the builders want to do.
Thanks0 -

Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Contact your local planning, expensive if you have to rip it out if you ever sell it0

Work involved with concrete
SO you can see its not just a case of throwing concrete in, quite labour intensive.0 -
i had my garage done last summer.
We were going to use special insulation but in the end used polestrine insulation to raise the floor level & it is overlaid with hardboard.
We're happy with it,
neighbours has there's done with solid wooden beams, they're happy with theirs
i think its up to you, price might vary?
We didnt have concrete because we wanted to consider that it would be easier to turn back to a garage if someone in the future wants to0
