Is he sure that the private number plate is being sold with the car? Usually the plate is removed and replaced with a standard one by the 'owner' of the private plate. Obviously if the person no longer wants the plate then it can be passed along with the car.

I have 2 cars with private plates and when I sell them I will transfer the plates onto the news cars and the DVLA will give my old cars a registration number for the year it was registered.

Therefore, you can remove the plates at a very small cost and ask the DVLA for a a "normal" registration so I doubt very very much that having private plates impacts on anyones insurance.

BUT - make sure the plate format is compliant. See the DVLA website for further details. Again if the format has been played with its just a matter of going to an outlet such as Halfords to get a new set made up with the correct font and spacing.

Happy safe driving to your son.

I cannot even imagine that any insurer would care about a registration number plate.

If it is a problem he could sell the private plate or ask the DVLA to change it. (That would incur a charge of about £80 )
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Thanks for all the replies, i Kube are very strict on any modifications to a car as this could raise the premium quite a bit or they could even refuse to insure him and as the insurance on the car is 2300 now i dont really want to be banged for any more.

It is not a modification as such, it is only a number plate.

You have said i Kube (whoever they are) are strict about 20 times now but what seriously makes you believe a private reg is a modification?
