I think the point that people are trying to make is that you should be happy with what you are getting, no one is forcing you to buy an 8Mb contract,
you will get the maximum speed that your TELEPHONE LINE will take,

and as i said in a previous post it is a telephone line after all, there are varying factors why your speed changes and the Contention ratio is one of them,

unfortunatley for you, you dont seem happy with what you are getting so you do only have two choices, stop broadband or accept what speed you do get is still better than a lot of people.

Thanks Rex for the above and most of what you say has already been covered by others and agreed with! And yes I am probably on a hiding to nothing but my mane beef was about being charged the same as other customers for an inferior service and we seem to have gone of the track a little. It is important to remember that WE are the customer and providing an equal service to all should be the norm and when people say ‘oh just accept that BT is crap’, then I for one think its unfair and not acceptable.

I don't understand why you keep going on about inferior service. You are receiving the best line speeds possible for you, given your distance from the exchange and line quality. The nature of ADSL Max is very dependent on these factors.

I really can't see any grounds for you to complain.

What other choice do ‘we’ have? For instance, how many times do you see an advert that states must have BT line installed???? You still seem to be falling into the British mentality of ‘oh well, just put up with it’. BT are to blame for the inferior service they are providing.
And yes I have asked cable companies and was told not in the foreseeable future.

choice is down to the competitors, its not as if BT stop them from putting cables in the road is it?

Consider yourself lucky you get that as I only get a meg.

From what your saying I guess you didnt check what speeds ur line are capable of before ordering?

And as other people have already said your getting an upto 8meg service so as long as its not crawling along at dialup speeds and constantly dropping im afraid there is nothing you can do about it as bt has already said.

I'm no apologist for BT, by inclination they still presume they have a monolopoly and have had to be dragged kicking and screaming [far to slowly IMO] by the regulators onto a more level playing field. They have also only ever cut prices or produced better products when challenged by their competion.
That said if there was a nomination for the daftest post of the month I'd nominate this one - it's unreal!
Only 5 or 6 years ago virtually no-one had residential BB. At first 512k was introduced, then 1 and 2 meg packages and only within the last year has UP TO 8meg been introduced. All of these packages carry a prominent "health warning" that it is the best speed your line can take - and even your own set up/internal wiring/ computer etc can slow it down.
So to make sure everyone is treated fairly BT must change ALL it's cabling in less than a year? Who is going to pay for that? Are you, Pete, going to be happy that your line rental goes up by some astrinomical amount? More so, is some poor sap who doesn't even have or use BB going to have to pay as well?
Get real, BT rent you a phone line, operative word being PHONE. Apart from charging a fee to enable BB and then your ISP charges you pay no more for the line than someone who doesn't use BB - is that fair?
Life often isn't fair - get used to it - or move next door to a telephone exchange.

    nail & head there ian!
  • Well thanks for suggesting my post for daft nomination of the month, I take it as a compliment. What some of you seem to be in agreement with is that we should put up with an inferior service and aren’t we lucky to be getting it, what luddites !!! BT must change.
Sorry guys but you keep doffing your cap to Bt and we will still be in this appalling situation in another ten years.
I am well aware of market forces and the cost of upgrading but feeling sorry for a company that holds a (virtual, no pun intended) monopoly on ‘us’…. you get real!

We are well behind other countries

as a direct result of the lack of investment (and high charges) by BT in the past.
Look what Milton Keynes had to do to get broad band! http://www.bb4mk.org/

BTW I did check what speed I could expect, 5MB

You keep skipping a question though:

Who is going to pay for BT to upgrade all of their lines? Every last one? Because if they do it for you, they have to do it for all.

That said, they're implementing 21CN (look it up, and look at the cost which they're funding, it's in the billions) so that people can get completely new services.

Really annoys me to be called a luddite or BT apologist, I'm neither. I'm simply not ignorant of the fact that it was BT who made broadband available for 99% of the country. No-one ever whinges on about the fact that cable companies will not provide to your area because of the costs for them.

I bet, if you'd got 8MB, and then Waitrose had called you and said you're going to pay an extra £4 a month for it because some other people can't get 8mb and it's not 'fair', you'd be the first to complain.

Who’s going to pay for it??? BT = US!!! Doh!!
Looked at 21CN, it’s linked on the MK url on my previous post so yes I am aware of the cost.
If your annoyed at the terminology, no apologies their I’m afraid, if the cap fits………your just making excuses and passively accepting what BT offer, and therefore rejecting/resisitng change. Take a look at the report I linked to and MANY others that state; BT held up broadband uptake in this country.

What a silly analogy you make about charging me extra in the name of equality. MANY ISP’s ( as I have said before) are dangling (up to) 8MB in front of consumers to get their custom knowing full well that 8MB is not obtainable to the vast majority. One very nice, helpful guy at Waitrose pointed out “I’m on a hiding to nothing” ( as someone on here told me!) when I raise this speed problem BT.

From some of the replies on here it would appear that speed is a big issue and the price we pay for it varies. So far nobody has suggested any thing that can be done to address this except put up with it and be thankful !! MK action group had the right idea.
  • Nah, you're just another person who wants the world but will only pay for the ocean,
