Effective mosquito repellent

Some people say skin so soft is not really a repellent but I have always used it and find it keeps them at bay when nothing else will. If you are upset by the bites I have found that, since I started going on a course of antihistimines for my allergies, I only get a tiny red dot where I once got a huge swollen lump. You can get them from the pharmacy and they arent nessisarily drowsy any more.0

last year when we were in thailand whatever we used didn't want to work until our 'neighbours' in the next cottage gave us some of their repellant- it was a long stick sort of like thick incense and the bugs didn't come near our balcony again! we took it to our next hotel and it lasted for days
the guys next door were german so i don't actually know what it's called, there were some language barrier issues..0 -
Just looked at that Aspivenim kit....at first read, you think its just some sort of gimmicky thing you'd buy and put in a drawer....but it seems to get good reviews. We are going to Rhodes in August and I'll have to buy one...still covered in bites from last holiday !0

Daneuron is the tablet to buy if you want a suitable dose.
Works for me and dead cheap. No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
Thanks guys....some valuable information there.
I have bought a product containing 50% DEET (yuk) but will definitely try the Vit B tablets and buy the Aspivenim kit too. As well as mozzies, there are also snakes on the island that I am visiting.
Am I mad??
Will post once I am back on the effectiveness of the above.YOUR = belonging to you (your coat); YOU'RE = you are (I hope you're ok)

I was advised a number of years ago by my local chemist
after returning from Majorca for a number of bite marks
I was advised to, in future rub the inside of a banana skin over the affected bite area
have used this method a number of times since, and can honestly say it worked a treat0 -
I too am very fair and pale skinned and get bitten easily. Somehow I never remember mossies as kid in this country but for the past 6-7 years have been bitten badly every summer. I have tried the Avon SSS but though it is a good product find I am just as tempting to mosquitos when wearing it. I have also tried a small "clicker" which gives the bitten area a small shock. Allegedly this provides relief, however I found it simply gave me more pain in an already sensitive area!
I personally dislike the idea of wearing DEET and always try alternatives. I have just ordered an insect repellant block from Lakeland, has anyone tried this - does it work?
Thanks to sand - will definately try Vit B1 tablets.0 -
Not a repellent, but we spend 5 months a year in Asia and use these things when we get bitten, for us they just take the sting/itch away and you forget about the bite - obviously it does NOT protest against malaria etc. I wouldn't be without mine. I think the UK supermarkets sell them as well.

Well the trip was FAB and I only got 4 bites. Usually I am covered in them.
I took the Avon Skin So Soft (original); DEET spray and the Aspivenim kit. The only time I got bitten was when I forgot to wear any of the sprays one evening, so completely my own fault.
The only problem I had was wondering which cream/spray/moisturiser to put on my skin first. I needed factor 30 suncream so used that too, but developed a nasty allergy which I am still trying to remedy three weeks after I've come home. I used the Avon product every day (after the suncream) and that seemed to work. I used the DEET in the evenings (except the evening I forgot to put it on).
I'm going again in 6 weeks time and will take the Avon and DEET sprays as I feel both were effective.YOUR = belonging to you (your coat); YOU'RE = you are (I hope you're ok)
