For goodness sakes just use common sense! If your child(ren) are prone to running off then of course don't. If you can trust them to sit still for one minute and you are not the paranoid type that a meteor will come crashing into the car from outer space then I really see no harm in leaving them to sit in the car for two minutes.

Heaven forbid we dare be further than arms reach from our children before they are 18!
I took mine in when they were tiny as I had this awful fear they'd be engulfed in flames and people wouldn't be able to open the car doors as I always lock the car when I leave it.
Yeah I know what you mean. I pass those cars all the time on the forecourts!
Once they were old enough to open the door themselves, I started leaving them in there.
So once they were old enough to open the door and escape onto the forecourt you started leaving them alone. Isn't there a flaw in the logic there?

I saw a TV news story last week where a guy was putting groceries in the back of his car and someone drove off with his 5 year old son because he left the keys in the ignition

Can you not just use the pay at pump instead of having to go in? They have them at most petrol stations

None of those around here, and no good if you have a visa electron.

I psersonally am in the camp of them being safer secured in the car that being dragged across a busy forecourt.

I've done both, just depended on the age of dd and whereabouts I got the petrol from. Also leaving a baby in a car was safer than a child who could undo the belt and escape across the forecourt!
DD is 7 now and she will come with me unless I am close and in full view, she's a sensible kid but I guess it's everyone else i worry about:o

If I had a young baby that was asleep, I'd let them stay in the car....that would go for any little one up to about 3, and I'd make sure they were strapped in and safe before going in. Any older, and they'd come in, but would have to behave and not demand stuff, as I won't buy it for them

Good grief! Aren't you getting a little wound up by this?

I never said it was a rational thought - that's why I called it an 'awful fear'!

The part about them being able to open the door was a response to this fear I had about them being engulfed in flames! They never attempted to get out of the car and I simply meant (in my mind) they'd be able to open the door so someone could get them out.

Again, I didn't say it was a rational fear!

That said, I do believe it is irresponsible to leave a child where they can't be seen for more than a minute or so. That seems a common sense approach to me.

But either way, no need to get in a tizz about differing opinions! Lighten up before you burst a blood vessel! :D

    Probably!

Unless we are asking if parents spend more on petrol so they can pay at the pump...? :D

Well more for the prat who left his keys in the ignition!! What a PRAT!

I leave my daughter in the car when Paying for petrol as here in devon we only have 1 out of about 10 petrol pumps that let you pay at the pump :T I can see her all the time so if anything was to happen I could run out and help. But to be honest, if the petrol station were to set alight we'd both be dead as there would be an explosion!
