After being reconnected by BT……
Is it standard procedure to put their customers on an 18 Month Contract?
Can I switch to another landline provider?
If it were possible to leave……What is the best way to go about this?0 -
On what basis were you reconnected-what charge did you pay and what tariff did you select?
The 2 current phone tariffs are 12m contracts, the Talk and Surf tariff is 18m.
I presume that a disconnection and reconnection is counted as commencing a new contract, in which case you are locked in for 12 or 18m, unless you are prepared to pay the early termination fee.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I was reconnected following a long dispute with BT.
I got OTELO involved and they instructed BT to connect the line with charge.
That's the thing............I did not select any tariff.
I just got a letter from telling me BT that they were coming to check and set up everthing on 12/3/10....(they didn't come!!!)
The letter details my new account details......
* I got a new number............gutted....I had my last number for over 10years
*Call usage- £75
*Quarterly...Paper Bill
*You have agreed to pay you bill by: No monthly payment plan or Direct Debit....
Payment Processing Fee: £1.50
I wasn't give the option to change to a price plan of my choice ......I just got the letter detailing the above0 -
Reconnection of an existing line is usually just done at the exchange. However, they would ask you to be in in case of problems, in which case the Openreach engineer might need access to the property.
I don't understand the reference to' £75 call usage'. According to your first post, you are on the Unlimited Weekend tariff-this is the basic default BT tariff. What tariff do you actually want to be on?
The contract length for E&W is 12m, however the 18 contract length may be as a result of the basis on which you were reconnected, i.e. if you didn't pay the normal rate of £124.
If you want to change to the Anytime package you can easily do so, either by logging into your online account, or by calling BT.
Given your history with BT, woud it not be better to switch to paper-free biling by direct debit?-you'll also save a lot of money each year.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks Macman......
The £75 refers to call usage level.........if I go over this BT will let me know.
With regard to changing my tariff.......a mate told me about BT Basic .....I am going to see if i'm eligible for that.
I'm going to contact BT today but I don't want to be put on hold.
Does anyone have the email address for BT customer services?
Following my recent history with BT I think it will be better to contact BT via email as there is a record of correspondence!!!0 -
You won't be able to downgrade your tariff if you've just signed up for 12 or 18m.
BT Basic is a social tariff, it's fine if you are a very light user, but if you go over your call allowance it gets very expensive.
If you want inclusive daytime calls, you need to be on Anytime. If not, you are already on Unltd Weekend, which is the default tariff. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I wasn't given any options.
Following instructions from OTELO BT was told to reconnect my line.
I did nothing ...........I spoke to no-one!!
One morning the letter arrived from BT informing me of the my new BT service.
The letter detailed that BT would come to my home to check and set up everthing on a specified date. No engineer came !!!
I only learned via this forum that most reconnections were done at the exchange.....I wish BT told me that before!!!
I've been put on a lenghty 18th month contract.......which I did not agree to!!!
I would have preferred a 12 contract, if I was given the option.
What payment plans can I move to?0 -
It was up to you to tell them what tariff you wanted, you have been put on the default tariff as previously advised-what tariff were you on before they disconnected you? If you want to upgrade to Anytime calls, just call them up or do it through your online account. The extra cost is £4.99.
You would need to discuss the 18m contract with them, normally it would be 12m, but clearly your recent BT history may have something to do with this.No free lunch, and no free laptop
