I once watched my friend clean her loo with a sponge, which she then used for doing the sink and floor in the bathroom too, then popped it under the sink for next time. blerg!

It doesn't bother me at all. It's only used for cleaning the toilet, it's kept in there & never needs to be moved through the rest of the house. Whenever I bleach the toilet (not very often because I don't really approve of using too much bleach) I leave brush in bowl. But even if it's full of germs - so what? I'm not going to clean my teeth with it or even the kitchen floor and I'm not handling it by the brush end.

I buy the 90p ones from Ikea. New one every month. To keep the little bowl bit clean I hold it under the loo flush when I clean the toilet. (Yes, wearing gloves.) Then I pop a drop of bleach in the loo and leave the brush down there for ten minutes or so. We are a regular "morning" family so if I clean the loo after they've gone out I'm pretty sure the brush will stay clean till the next day.

I'm a recent convert to the ones produced by Flylady in America. They're 'only' 6.95 dollars but there is, of course, the expense of postage from the States on top. I'm seeing them (I bought two, one for each of my loos) as a bit of an investment, in the sense that they're made from rubber (they're called Rubba Swishas, by the way) so I think they'll be very durable and save me money in the long run. Also, the rubber 'spikes' seem to stay clean easily, unlike bristles, which trap 'stuff' (if you know what I mean...). I'm finding them much better than conventional brushes so far, anyway. They don't come with a holder but, as it happens, they fit perfectly into the holders of my previous brushes (cheapo ones from Homebase) and are also an exact colour match for them.
  • I've never owned a toilet brush (and neither have my parents) and don't really see the point of them. I do have an old washing up brush which gets used very occasionally if required, otherwise it's just a squirt of bleach or toilet cleaner, and leave it to work.

I also have a Toilet Duck , when I finish cleaning the loo I drop the 'thingy' (sorry don't know what to call it) into the loo and leave it a couple of hours before flushing , that keeps the scale at bay..

Asda do a version of the toilet duck ones that are £1 for a pack of the wedges and a handle so the whole lot gets changed regularly. TBH I use loads of bleach rather than have to touch other people's poo remains. yuck!
