You need internet connection for most sat nav apps.
I have Garmin Mobile XT on my N97 Mini which does work without GPS but the routing is not the best. Reason being it needs internet connection to help pick up GPS signal. With the internet off it takes absolute ages getting signal and does loose it quite abit.
With the internet turned on, it takes seconds to get signal and does not loose it.
This is same story with the Ndrive app which i also have.0 -
Any suggestions for sony ericsson C903.
Had free trial of Wayfinder but that has run out.0 -

Thanks. I appreciate that Assisted GPS is intended to improve the startup performance of GPS, but it's not at all obvious by how much. I've read a number of reports that Ovi Maps works just fine without an internet connection, and others that say it's very slow - it's difficult to know who to believe! For my purposes I'd only ever be on foot, so not moving very fast!Stompa0 -
Other than Nokia's Ovi Maps, are there any other free mapping systems for mobiles where apps and maps can be downloaded via a PC, and they can then be used without requiring any subsequent internet access?
Thanks
Sometimes next to free is low cost and sometimes the low cost, works out cheaper than the hassle of searching or even stealing software
I just loaded Sygic 9 onto my Satio, I wonder why I even wasted how many months with wisepilot amazegps, messing around with trying to load nokia maps (apparently you can jailbreak symbian handsets and then load nokia maps), anyway the sygic cost £27 for UK maps and does not require a data connection as the maps are stored on the phone, as for use, it is equal to or better than my tomtomone version 20 -

No problem mate.
I have also tried Sygic but to be honest i did not like it much but then again it is the cheapest compared to others.
Out of the apps i have tried, my favourite is the Garmin followed by Ndrive and OVI maps.
OVI maps is free now on top end nokia phones, and i would reccomending getting web on your phone so you can use OVI maps plus all the other benefits of having internet access on your phone.0 -
Yes, but Ovi Maps are now free, and AIUI the maps are stored on the phone.
As is Sygic 9, as said Nokia maps can be loaded free onto symbian phones that are not nokia by jailbreaking the phone, I can't see any difference in choosing say sygic on my phone compared to if tomtom was available for my phone, as I have a TT unit I can tell you they both function exactly the same for route planning and other navigation functions.0 -
Hi,
I have a Nokia N85 and am thinking of installing OVI Maps 3.0 and the Nokia OVI suite.
I wish to use it for navigation and would like to know if I would be charged while using the service or will it be free.
I am confused as I have googled for the answer and the responses are confusing whereby some say it is free and others say if you download maps it does not need to connect to the internet.
I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me an 'idiots' guide.
Thanks0
