I consider a Tory administration for 5 yrs, the lesser of two evils, 13 yrs is enough for nu labour IMO ..0

New Labour was almost a complete re-invention of the party, something which the Tories are far from achieving. Scratch the surface and you find an unsavoury mixture of old style Thatcherites, hands-off-my-wad sociopaths and homophobes.
Labour can claim a base of moral principle which relates to collective responsibility, fairness and the advancement of all. What is the Tory equivalent? Does anyone actually know what the base Tory creed is?
It has never been articulated formally but the clue is in the name - God is in his heaven, the Lord is in his castle and we shall seek to conserve this status quo against all comers, the majority included...LizEstelle wrote: »Oh and here's another one:

This really is great fun.

FWIW I think Nu-Labour and the Tories are two sides of the same coin.
I think this election both parties will suffer from lack of support and the smaller parties will benefit.I'm not getting into tit-for-tat mud slinging but it does seem that Liz is/has been a very pro active party member or she,s p1ssed ,having said that she does have some passion ,of sorts which is to be commended... Don't want to be accused of sitting on the fence so all I will say is 13yrs is more than enough .0 -
What about some data.....
Since 1997 whilst RPI has increased by about 40%...
The tax free allowance has increased by 83%
The upper band for basic tax has increased by 50%
The basic rate of income tax has dropped from 24% to 20% but NI has increased (I cant find the historical data) but by less than the 4% required to compensate.
VAT remains the same at 17.5%
Higher rate tax rate remains the same at 40%, though with a 50% rate at £100K
Seems to me that as far as personal taxation is concerned compared with changes in the past this has been a period of stabililty.

new labour may have been a complete reinvention of the party , but since brown has been at the helm , he has managed to take them back to the glorious years of the 70's where the militant unions are pulling the strings0 -
Can we please park the finger pointing and name calling? Punters don't come at this from a position of having a !!!! list of moans about Labour/Tories. All they are looking at is who will protect their best interests - which is what voters always have at front of mind.
2 sets of ordinary people - those who have done badly in the recession, and those who have done very well out of it. Neither group are going to vote for austerity. The Tory lead has all but vanished and the start of the trend was Osborne's speech at last year's conference.
Frankly comments about which government was worse - Thatchers or Callaghans - has about as much resonance with voters as a braincell has resonance with Geoff Hoon.0 -
For the Records Excerpts from 1997 Labour Party Manifesto.I want to renew faith in politics through a government that will govern in the interest of the many, the broad majority of people who work hard, play by the rules, pay their dues and feel let down by a political system that gives the breaks to the few, to an elite at the top increasingly out of touch with the rest of us.
MP's ?People are cynical about politics and distrustful of political promises. That is hardly surprising. There have been few more gross breaches of faith than when the Conservatives under Mr Major promised, before the election of 1992, that they would not raise taxes, but would cut them every year; and then went on to raise them by the largest amount in peacetime history starting in the first Budget after the election.
Have matters improved?New Labour believes in a society where we do not simply pursue our own individual aims but where we hold many aims in common and work together to achieve them. How we build the industry and employment opportunities of the future; how we tackle the division and inequality in our society; how we care for and enhance our environment and quality of life; how we develop modern education and health services; how we create communities that are safe, where mutual respect and tolerance are the order of the day. These are things we must achieve together as a country. In health policy, we will safeguard the basic principles of the NHS, which we founded, but will not return to the top-down management of the 1970s. So we will keep the planning and provision of healthcare separate, but put planning on a longer-term, decentralised and more co-operative basis. The key is to root out unnecessary administrative cost, and to spend money on the right things - frontline care.
Constantly changing Ministers for Health. Frontline staff dealing with paperwork and targets, rather than patient care.We will stand up for Britain's interests in Europe after the shambles of the last six years, but, more than that, we will lead a campaign for reform in Europe. Europe isn't working in the way this country and Europe need. But to lead means to be involved, to be constructive, to be capable of getting our own way.
And did it let the voters decide as it promised? We have modernised the Labour Party and we will modernise Britain. This means knowing where we want to go; being clear-headed about the country's future; telling the truth; making tough choices; insisting that all parts of the public sector live within their means; taking on vested interests that hold people back; standing up to unreasonable demands from any quarter; and being prepared to give a moral lead where government has responsibilities it should not avoid.
Seems we are heading back to the days of the 70's when Unions were hell bent on destroying everybody elses livelihoods.0
