yippeee! no need to water the allotment today, we are having a massive storm here in notts- just hope we don't get flooding anywhere.
On a planting note I have waiting to go in butternut squash, courgettes and sweetcorn. Don't think I will be putting them in today- they may get washed away!

what are the rest of you up to?

Hi Thrifty, I'm sheltering from the storm! Yesterday I picked two lots of strawberries and planted more peas and runner beans. The first lot of peas are looking great and should be ready to pick next week-end. The water butt is now full and everything is looking a bit soggy but the garden really needed it. My mulberry tree, which I moved as I had planted it in the wrong place, is covered in berries and it is a tiny little tree-unexpected result. Apricots don't look that great this year but last year the tree was absolutely full of fruit so I'm guessing it is having a rest.

I have been out four times checking my potatoes and tomatoes in the last hour. Got an e-mail from blightwatch to say about smiths period in our area and am worried about my babies!! Am going to spray them all with milk tomorrow and keep fingers crossed.

Didn't do much today, recuperating from being quite poorly the past couple of days....but i did manage to sow some chrysanthemum seeds in a morrisons bucket and also potted on some french beans into some recycling bags i had spare.

All the rain lately in North Staffs has really seen to my garden, everything seems to have grown at least 25% bigger than it was before the rain set in. I'm so pleased!

Morning Kath, glad you managed to get out and do a bit then.

I am not quite sure what the milk does, either prevents blight or slows it down according to another poster on the blight thread. Am going to try it today.

Mixed weather here today, but managed to make use of my son's strength by asking him to lug some wood bark from B and Q to the car and then from the car, to the garden. Couldn't do it without him, so i am pleased to have his help.

Potted on some radish seedlings and beetroot seedlings and a couple of courgettes too. Hopefully it will be dry tomorrow, as i would like to get some more things in the ground/raised beds etc....especially the rest of the squash.

  • Like nearly everyone we have been eating salad leaves, and also radishes. I have had the first crop of potatoes grown from 3 sprouting potatoes at the start of March and they were lovely.
Runner beans, courgettes, and tomatoes all doing well. And I ate my first strawberry today. I think they are all going to ripen if we get another few days of sun, followed before long by rapsberries and cherries.

Hi everyone, well the rain we had was really bad, washed a lot of the soil from a border I had started digging in my "new house, crap lawn, no borders, on a slope garden" down to the bottom of the house. At one point we opened the back door and the water level was really high.

We moved here 6 months ago and have done very little except cut the grass. The last garden I had was flat, lovely loamy soil, filled to bursting point. Have been spending all my gardening time at the allotment since we moved though!
Am going to go up this afternoon to plant the sweetcorn, courgettes and squash. Wonder how many weeds will have grown?:rotfl:
