Sky scam call

Just to warn people, Sky are making calls today. I have never ever been a customer of Sky.

I just had a call - the caller knew my name and asked if my Sky box was working properly.

I asked where he was calling from and if I could call him back.

He said that I couldn't call him back and he ignored my first question.

He asked how many Sky Boxes I have.

Very irritated by now, I said that I wanted the telephone number and he rattled off very quickly an 0844 number. I'm handy with numbers and managed to remember it.

I asked his name - Willy (!)

I said I was going to report him and he rang off without another word.

I rang the number 0844 2410285 and lo and behold, it's Sky sales. What a suprise.

What a stupid organisation they are. They obviously know that I'm not a Sky customer and they are using dubious and misleading methods to try to improve sales. They must be desperate.

How irritating.

Was it not one of the random warranty sales folks that try random numbers

Pretty sure Sky don't do sales calls from the 0844 number

Even although he gave that number as the number he was calling from does not mean that he was actually calling from it.

When I get calls from companies and they ask me to confirm my telephone number I give them my local moron church number.

They always say that is the number we have down for you.

Yeah its not sky, just a 3rd party dodgy warranty company trying to pass themselves off.
Get the calls all the time, and have never had sky TV.

I have had a call from "unknown" number, they know my name and say they are from Sky technical and ask about if my box is ok. I am a sky customer but I questioned them on whether they are actually Sky Digital, they just reply with "yes we are sky technical".

They then asked if they can take my address, I then questioned that if they were from sky then they would know, he then proceded to read an address which was completely wrong.

I then did what I usually do straight away with these type of calls and say "can you hold a second", put the phone on the side and carry on with what I was doing, sometimes they sit patiently for 5 or more minutes before hanging up. Its great to waste their time.

This particular company is obviously just a random, trying their luck to sell warranties and dont have any more info than a name.

For quite a few months was reading different comments on internet abous sky warranties... I don't blame those people who are angry after being misled by some companies, who tried to run sky warranties business... Not all are the same. But why there is so much anger from the others?
We do purchase sky system, enjoying it, and yet, when somebody calls to offer protection plan, we do get angry? Why? I do agree 100% with those people, who are being pushed too much to take out the deal, or with those, who are being told one thing, and sold another. But lets try to look from another side: is a person calls you, and after you ask if the caller is from sky, he replys NO - the agent tells the true. None of us has to buy it, but we can listen what is being offered and choose the best. Sky repair Plan is recomended by sky, but NOT PROVIDED by sky. Warranty provider Domestic & General (also selling cover plans to any type of electrical equipment in a house). So if you will have any trouble dealing with them, sky will not help. Also, if other warranty providers does not pay money to sky ( as Domestic & general) to be recomended, it does not make then worst or fraud. (whoever drives BMW gets insurance from any company, but does not check if insurance prividers are recomended by BMW)
I did receive calls before. Instead if deciding over the phone, was requesting post or website address. And out of all, chose what was best for me. So as everybody else can do the same, and avoid scams.
The people who work in call centres, has to maintain standards, if you feel that advisor is being rude, or not listening to your needs, or anything else, you can allways talk to his supervisor. And at no cost they should to hang up the phone on you.
But please, we can not spill all the anger on the people in a call centres who are trying to earn money to pay their bills? When we have so many redundancies these people are strugling aswell... They are just doing their job.
I guess, that the biggest confusion is that we don't have warranties in any major comparison website like moneysupermarket or cunfused.com. It would help for people to choose and would give more information - less confusions.
good luck everyone. Hope did not make anyone upset with my comment. :)

    dear tricticale,
i just said, that buying sky warranty or selling it is not a crime. And it does not have to be recomended by sky or anybody else.

I think I understand what you mean, do you happen to work in a call centre?

You seem to have missed my point though, my anger is that these companies are phoning in the first place as I have gone to the trouble of registering with the telephone preference sheme etc and still they call.

Thats what makes me angry, I never give my home number to anyone except those companies that have to have it, BT, Broadband, and unfortunately Sky.

Everyone else gets my mobile number, and anyone who would phone me (friends and family) would only use my mobile (or landline in an emergency)

I dont want companies trying to sell me thing over the phone, thats why I try to waste as much of their time as possible by leaving the phone on the side letting them hang on, wasting their time ultimately.

I dont want to talk to supervisors or get info by post instead, just not receiving the call in the first place would be the best thing.

I agree, everyone has to pay bills and call centres are a necessary evil, someone has to work there. But its the dishonesty which a huge number of these companies utilise often fishing for personal details they dont have which annoys me. They can easily con the elderly into buying things they dont need/want.

Extended warranties have been often mis sold and have often been proved to be a waste of time and money.

I certainly wouldnt buy a warranty to insure my sky box from a third party insurer.

For 4 years i was working as a sky sales advisor on the venues. Have couple of friends who do work in a call centres and sells warranties. We all trying to provide best customer service to all people possible, sadly, those who lie and scam customers - makes us to pay and be called liars aswell. If you have any TPS service, contact the company, that you still receiving sales calls, they should stop it by contanting each sales cmpany.

    Been there, done that unfortunately.
The less reputable companies dont give away much info and if you question them as to which company they are from, they often terminate the call and as the number appears as not available then I dont have anything to report to the TPS. All the company has to do is call on a different number.

I had a problem fairly recently with a company calling me literally every couple of weeks trying to get me to return to them as a customer. I complained everytime and was assured that I wouldnt get another call and they supposedly made a note not to call anymore but they still did. Eventually I logged them as a nuisance caller with BT.

    Who was the company?.....BT themselves!!

I had gone with another phone company and was locked into a 2 year contract which I explained to BT everytime their sales call centre called me to try and get me back as a customer.

I got refered to a senior customer care person who called me and apologised, and admitted that on the system it did actually have me down as "no marketing calls" !! they completely ignored this fact.

Its this kind of example that makes me angry when some sales person calls me, just as Ive sat down to dinner or just as Im putting my young son to bed.

Unfortunatley taking a job in a call centre leaves you open to all sorts of abuse from unhappy customers, as you will be the first point of contact.

Im not saying its right, but thats what happens and will happen all the time there are cold calling companies making dishonest calls to people, the consumer has no way of being able to tell what they are being told is true or not, hence why all call centre staff are unfortunately often tarred with the same brush.
