Average Speed Cameras

Comments

  • The technology exists that could be fitted to all new cars to stop everyone speeding everywhere full stop. GPS integrated to vehicle ECUs to limit speed to the speed limit. They'd lose their revenue source though.

There was talk a few years ago of Derbyshire installing an average speed check system in the Peak District that could time a car between any number of entry, exit and intermediate points and issue a ticket for those that covered the distance in too quick a time.

Easiest way to avoid fines is never to clean your number plate, illegal yes, but I've never heard of anyone even being pulled for a non-visible plate and I see loads like that during every winter.

    .

This system did not have home office type approval at the time, it gained it at the end of last year so will soon be coming to a road near you.

At times I have to visit a town exactly one hour from home, and driving there involves a stretch of narrow trunk road. When they had road works recently, there was a set of lights followed by several hundred yards at 40 mph, and of course there were drivers who shot away from the lights at about 60 regardless...

However I noticed how little difference the lights and restrictions actually made to arrival time. I'd reach my destination about one or two minutes later than usual. No worse than that.

I'm sure I didn't make a mistake in timing it. Major traffic jams excepted, I've often noticed that small delays affect arrival time less than people realise. I have a busy life like the next person, but the knowledge helps me stay cool.

Edit (Sorry, don't mean to sound smug! ;))

Anyone who drives the section of the M1 from about J25 to 28 will know we have had continous 50 av cameras on this section for about 4 years whilst the road is widened to 4 lanes. I use it every week and know I am safe at an indicated 60 mph. That according to my satnav is 56.5 mpg.

I was told the cameras were set at 50 + 10% +2mph. Yes, I'm sailing close to the line but so are many others. And there never actually seems to be anyone working the section.

You do find a few travelling at seriously excessive speeds, and I can only assume they are certain they will not be traced, false plates, stolen car, borrowed car:eek:. I'm told the fine for no plate or 1/2 a plate, (seen alot of those) is £30, about 1/2 the cost of a speeding ticket, well........
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I've come to the conclusion that no matter how fast you travel (I use GPS data too), there will always be someone overtaking you.

I was in front of the big man years ago, I sat there for hours watching us all get called one by one into the dock.

Everyone who was up for speeding through roadworks was averaging at LEAST double the going rate for speeding i.e normally 3pts and £60, they were getting 6pts and well over £100 fines.

It aint worth it, even if there is nobody working there.

You are absolutely right. I regularly make a 200+ mile journey and have done for the past 5 years. My journey time is much more affected by traffic conditions than whether I am driving in a relaxed style or as fast as I can.

Result, I drive in a relaxed style and gain 5-10 mpg.:T

I know somebody that has got caught doing 57 in a 50 on the M4 average speed check so it must vary from site to site.
The new versions of SPECS uses mobile technology meaning it doesn't even require connecting cables. Prepare for national rollout!!

They have just put average speed cameras on a single carriage way A road near me it's not a nice road and people do 80 plus down it because it's long and straight - personally I think average speed cameras are a better way of enforcing speed than the fixed ones - I can think of a couple of other roads I would like to see them on.

There are some on the M62 near Leeds at the moment and I have actually seen people speeding along in the 'overtaking' :D lane, and then slamming on when they get near the cameras - obviously not being able to understand the meaning of 'average'.. :rotfl:
:TProud to have lived within my means all my life :T
