I started my periods at 9...I remember it vividly it was awful as I had no idea what was happening to me as my mum had not had "the talk" with me...she didnt have the talk with me after either but thats another story, back then we didnt have sex ed until the middle of high school (14, 15) and nothing abut it in primary like there is nowadays.....Im not sure if it was easier starting earlier, I had really heavy periods during my teens but I dont know if thats just one of those things?

I think its great you are so concerned. All you can do is give her the facts and be open and there for her if she wants to know anything.

With the hugest respect, could I point out that this is a public forum, and some of the physical detail of pubescent girls given in these replies is a bit - how shall I put it? - explicit?? Maybe it's just me - but remember that anyone at all could be reading, including perhaps people who find an inappropriate enjoyment in discussions of 'breastbuds', 'fine blonde pubic hair' and 'cute girly underwear'.

There are an awful lot more explicit things available on the internet than this innocent discussion, you can't censor everything...

Exactly. Well meant fear but completely unnecessary.

My oldest dd is 8 and earlier this year I noticed that she was tearful a lot and also noticed she has begun to sprout hair. I did wonder if this was the beginnings of puberty and wasn't sure if she was too young. But it seems not.

Luckily she's ok at the moment and the tearfulness seems to have passed.

I agree. We are talking about these things in a factual manner and we shouldn't have to stop doing that, just in case a pervert comes along and *maybe* takes pleasure from it. I doubt it though, they are more likely to search out something far worse.

And if we took that attitude to everything then we'd never leave the house in case we got mugged/raped/attacked.

Treacly, no disrespect to you, and I understand where you are coming from, but I don't think it's a good idea to censor our conversations in that manner.

None taken but with the hugest of respect part of the forum section is aimed at families, theres a million and one potty training threads....a pregancy thread, a trying to concieve thread, a MC thread.

Puberty is a part of life too and Im actually shocked that anyone could find the word 'breastbuds' explicit?

Maybe but there will be the weirdos that get their kicks out of reading talk of breastfeeding on the parents thread or cervical mucus and peeing on sticks on the TTC thread, that doesn't mean its explicit or needs to be removed.

I remember i started in year 5, so fairly earlyish.

The only problem i had was realising i needed to shower more to keep clean :o and the fact the toilets in primary school obviously never had any bins so had to use the teachers toilet. Other than that i was ok, i too grew quickly, was the tallest in my class (everyone else caught up..i'm 5ft 6"). I point out refused to wear a bra till secondary school when mum took me to get measured....i was a36DD!

My DD has been wearing bras for 2 yrs now has hair in her nether regions still no sign of her periods yet though she is 12 in a weeks time. She has been aware of what is happening for many years as i have never hidden anything from her so hopefully she is fully prepared for when she does get them :-)
