I've had both a young persons card and a network card for south west trains in my time (not for 5 years or more now though)

I didn't notice any difference between them

you didn't get the 1/3 discount before 10 am or if you have to buy the ticket on the train (if you're late!) and i think theres retrictions on using rush hour trains particularly out of london

but a tenner sounds a bargain for 12 months even if you only use the train once every couple of months

in young person's you do get 1/3 discount before 10 am, but minimum fare apply's.

  • There is a railcard you can get 'in between' these ages - it comes under the Young Persons Railcard and is for mature students studying 20hrs a week or more. The College/Uni stamps your application and you take it to the station with photo and completed form.

None of my colleagues knew this existed until a tutor mentioned it.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but there are two services on the same track between Paddington and Heathrow with a BIG difference in cost and only 5 mins difference in journey time:
    1. Heathrow Express (every 15 mins, 23 mins, direct service)
      • £8.50 (open return with railcard)
      • £12.90 (open return without railcard)
    2. Heathrow Connect (every 30 mins, 28 mins, stops at 5 stations in between)
      • £19.10 (open return with railcard)
      • £29.00 (open return without railcard)

(prices from trainline.com - may be more/less elsewhere)

Oops - got the prices the wrong way around - £8.50/£12.90 belong to Connect and £19.10/£29 below to Heathrow Express.

Similar on the Victoria-Gatwick service, Gatwick Express £14:90 single or £26:80 open return, Southern £8:90 single or £12:00 open return, Southern less still with a railcard, £5:90 single or £7:90 o/r. 8 mins longer journey time on Southern
