It's like they leave the hangers in the lingerie (useless) and take out the hangers from clothing (useFUL) AAARGH!

Whenever you get a sales person telling you to use the bags, and your refusal has fallen on deaf ears, just wait until the transaction is complete, remove items from the bag take reciept, put your items where you want to put them and walk out, leaving the bag on the counter. Job done.

But I agree an email to head office is the right follow up approach, no use arguing with a minion.

Once you have paid for the goods and have a receipt then you can put them where you like. They cannot force you to take a carrier bag and they cannot demand the goods back as the contract is complete.

I would contact your local rag to tell them.

  • Some other shops are pretty insistent too!

In Bodycare, some time ago, I had to speak with 3 members of staff before they accepted that I did not have to take a bag.

While one of them was off to get the third one - someone more senior (!) - the original one said she might as well take payment. I pointed out that if they made me take a bag I would not be wanting the items after all...

One of their reasons was in case the things leaked - in which case I don't really want them either!

I think more and more shops are coming round though, I have fewer "discussions" with staff these days. Phew!

and how they manage to overcome this in their penney's stores in the republic of ireland where plastic bags are now taxed!

They use brown paper bags in all shops in Ireland.

Think thats just one assistant interpreting their rules badly.

No, it is their rule. I come up against it every time I shop there. I do the same as Poppy9, remove the clothes & leave the bag behind. No-one has challanged me at that stage yet.

oh ok,but where is the logic in it?!!There is usually a reason, and there are things that come to mind, but none that make sense.

the thing is they have so many shoplifters . And it is really hard to catch someone if we all refuse to use there bags .
I remember many years ago Penneys in Northern Ireland (now Primark ) used to staple the recept to the paper bags and staple the paper bags closed .Once you pay for the clothes you can remove them from there bag ,they are now your clothes .

I did think of that one,but all stores have this problem.Whether a person is putting stolen stuff into a Primark Bag or another bag, they still have to be seen to put it in,to be caught,so why would it make a difference??!Thats what i meant about the logic. However Primark is a strange company,so perhaps thats the simple answer. At least the Penneys idea makes some sense(if someone undid the staple, staff could see the bag was being reused,so could be more vigilant.

I have managed not to take a bag in Primark, it seems to only be a problem if they are busy - otherwise they dont bat an eyelid. I had this problem in BHS though. Just took the clothes out and left the bag on the counter whilst giving them a dirty look :) I use old bags to poop scoop so they do get 'reused' but even so.

Have often been tempted to ask them if they are going to give me a discount for the free advertising but not had to nerve :rotfl:
