u should have said they were reconditioned as i would image some peoples idea of 'as new' kinda means they arent brand new but havent been used perhapes old stock etc...

It sounds as if your buyer simply does not understand what 'as new' means.

'As new' is not reconditioned. If I was buying as new I would be miffed to receive a recon item.

Recon phones are cheap, look at the grabbit board with people buying them by the dozen to sell on. If the companies considerd them new why not sell them as new, why bother re labelling them and putting them in boxes clearly marked reconditioned?

Of course, the real question is: Can a reconditioned phone actually be as new.

It seem that people are assuming it can't be and thus stating that they would be unhappy.

The point about 'as new' is that if the description is correct, you cannot tell it from new.
Recon phones are cheap, look at the grabbit board with people buying them by the dozen to sell on. If the companies considerd them new why not sell them as new, why bother re labelling them and putting them in boxes clearly marked reconditioned?
Because the vast majority of reconditioned phones will be distinguishable from new.

It may be that some customer carefully unpacked their phone put the battery in and found if didn't work. So they send it back, the manufacturer/shop give them a new one and it's found the battery is faulty. So they put in a new battery and, voila, an 'as new' reconditioned phone. Of course, this won't happen often enough for the manufacturer to have a special procedure for reselling it as 'as new' so itwill just be added to the recon units.

And some lucky purchaser gets a recon phone that is indistinguishable from new.

Then they try and sell it and fall foul of someone who objects to the fact that the box says: "reconditioned".

    as new means

used a bit maybe, but you'd be hard pressed to tell

    like new but not quite

    etc, etc

if i'd bought something 'as new', i'd expect something that is used / reconditioned to a very high standard
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

This is a tricky one I would actually prefer a recon unit to one described as "as new.

The real point is under which heading it was advertised "new" or "used" if under new he has a point if under used I think the neg is unfair. Of course you can always leave that section blank and as a buyer I would probably e-mail seller to clarify.

You say that you got them from the manufacturer boxed and sealed and ready to go.

I take it that you didn't look at the phone your buyer was complaining about. Perhaps it wasn't in the prisitne condition that you thought?

I like it when sellers are completely honest and tell me every little detail - including a photo of the mark, if there is one. I would have expected you to say that the item was reconditioned, that you had checked it for visible marks and damage, and that either: there was no damage that you could see and it looked like new, or point out any marks.

    Hope that helps

if an item is worth £100 - my "as new" price would be £80 and reconditioned would be £65.

if it is reconditioned, you have to put this - if it is used, you have to put this.

Now I would be reckoning with a reconditioned unit I should get some sort of warranty but an "as new" would not necessarily carry any warranty from seller?!

well on ebay you arelucky if you get any warranty - if you buy it from a shop you should

  • I agree with Moglex, bleugh and Hintza. The point about the box is an important one though. If it is the same box they usually come in but with a removable "reconditioned" sticker, the customer has no cause for complaint. If, however, it is marked indelibly on the box itself, then it can't really be described accurately as "as new", and if someone had bought it as a gift, competition prize etc, expecting it to be indistinguishable from a new one, they would have legitimate cause for complaint. They would also have cause for complaint if the condition was marked "new" in the item specifics box (though I know this might happen with an accidental touch of a mouse wheel, even if the cursor is nowhere near the box).
In any case, the customer ought to contact the seller to attempt to resolve any problems before resorting to negative feedback. If the customer's main concern is that future customers should know that the items are reconditioned, they could always just ask the seller politely if they wouldn't mind clarifying that point in future listings, and they can still mention it in their comment if they leave a positive (or neutral).
