should I of got neg fb for this

Hi, I recently got some factory re-conditioned phones from a mobile phone manufacturer that I decided to sell on eBay. They were all sealed, identical and exactly the same as brand new ones apart from saying reconditioned on the box.

When I advertised these I just said that they were 'as new' mobile phones.

One of my buyers has left negative feedback saying that I claimed the phone was 'new' when infact it is reconditioned.

I did contact him and he said that he was happy with the service and doesn't want a refund just felt that he had to warn other potential buyer that my phones are reconditioned.

I’m not that bothered about the negative but I still can’t decide if I deserve it for not saying they were reconditioned in the advert. Any thoughts?

Did you click a 'new' category or just put 'as new' in the description? Personally I'd advertise any further ones as reconditioned. Surely if they're reconditioned, it implies they've already been used and then revamped?

I would have prefered to read they were reconditioned rather than as new. I would have left you neutral. I think 'as new' suggests just that. But I am a buyer.

Claiming the phones are 'as new' and not mentioning the fact that they are reconditioned is deceitful. There was obviously something wrong with the phone in the first place which led to them being reconditioned. This should have been made clear in the auction.

Why weren't you honest with the bidders? Did you think that by mentioning they were reconditioned would not get you as much money?

Feedback is a buyers opinion of the transaction as a whole. Perhaps the buyer felt lied to? If you choose not to state that the phones are reconditioned in your listing then I think it's fair that buyers mention this in their feedback as a warning to others who may be looking to by a new phone and not a reconditioned one.

I think he was underhand at leaving neg fb without actually contacting you. Yes perhaps you should have said reconditioned but 'as new' still means not new, perhaps used/reconditioned.

If something is described "as new" then to me that means the same as "not new". Whether I wanted to clarify with the seller what exactly "not new" meant would be up to me, if I was overly bothered about the difference between slightly used, reconditioned etc.

I do think its a bit mean I think giving you a neg, especially without contacting you. Perhaps you should be a bit clearer next time to avoid similar problems?

If I was buying I would be extremely unhappy to get a reconditioned phone if I was expecting a new one. However I think the buyer was a little hasty leaving feedback without going down the refund route first.

Personally if it had been me I would have asked the seller for a full refund and only negged if I was refused and had to go to a chargeback. I wuld probably have left a positive wth mention of the refund if the seller had agreed to that option.

  • When I placed the ad I didn't really give it that much thought. In my head I was thinking condition wise these are identical to brand new ones therefore I just put 'as new'.

It never crossed my mind that anyone would think 'as new' meant the same as 'brand new'.

If I get anymore I will put reconditioned in the ad just to avoid any further confusion.

u should have said they were reconditioned as i would image some peoples idea of 'as new' kinda means they arent brand new but havent been used perhapes old stock etc...

its odd that he was happy with the service yet felt the need to neg u, really he should have left a neutral or positive with the information that the phones were reconditioned

I have just purchased a pushchair (I havent got it yet so the following may change !) the advert states the grading of the buggy and what this means is given in a box further down. The listing does hint that these will be returned to an as new condition, but will need repair to get there.
Basically these are reconditioned catalogue returns. No where does it state brand new, but the seller has still got something like 20 negs because people really do believe that they can buy something for next to nothing. I read through the details of each neg and wasnt put off in the slightlest. i just took it to mean they didnt read the listing throughly, so dont be worried too much about the neg you received, its all relative.

To me something that is 'as new' means its not new, but equally not been used, so if there is no damage listed it should arrive un damaged but maybe with slight signs of use, ie have an opened box or no security tag.

In my (often wrong) opinion its up to the buyer to question things if they arent sure because as a seller you simply cant come up with all the possible random things a buyer may believe, no matter how much information is given someone always seems to interpret it wrongly.

As new has a very definite meaning.

It means that the item is indistinguishable from new, but is not new.

Provided it satisfies that criterion you have done nothing wrong.

It doesn't matter whether it is something that was returned unused because the original buyer didn't like the colour when they opened the box, or it has had parts replaced to make it work and or cosmetically mint.

It sounds as if your buyer simply does not understand what 'as new' means.
