Yeah probably but where do we go from getting that 32 goes into 50 once with 18 remaining?

So is it that you don't have a calculator - easy solution
Or he is supposed to be learning how to do long division?

I can help with either I'd just prefer not to waste time with the long division if it's not required.

Don't worry staceysteve, if that makes you thick I must be a total dunce as I struggle with my 6 year old's maths homework most of the time!

I'd write a note on the bottom of it saying that you've both tried it and are really struggling, that's what I do and then at least they know your son has had a go. Others might be in the same situation. Sounds like they need to explain it again in class.

OK, thanks. Your stepson is lucky that you are trying so hard to help him. Try the link posted above to Maths Is Fun. I've got to put my littleun to bed now but will check back later. I've got all this to come!

    50/32 = 50.00000 /32 yes?

    How many 32s in 5? 0
    How many 32s in 50? 1 r 18
    How many 32s in 180 (carried the 18 over to the tenth decimal 0) 5 r 20
    How many 32s in 200 (carried the 20 over to the hundreth decimal 0) 6 r 8
    How many 32s in 80 (carried the 8 over to the thousanths decimal 0) 2 r 16
How many 32s in 160 (carried the 16 over to the tenthousanths decimal 0) 5

    Therefore the answer is 1.5625

ETA: Would advise you get hold of your school calculation policy as different schools teach their kids different methods and you don't want to confuse your boy!

And he must be predicted a level 5? Just checked on the DFeS website and long division with 2 digits is a learning objective for extending yr6s (ie yr 7 work)

I'm a veteran of the 15 minute maths homework taking 2 hours. I tried talking to DSD's teacher about it and he didn't seem to care one little bit. "She's doing fine!" Not if I'm spending 2 hours a week teaching her what she's not learning in class she isn't! Thankfully she's moved schools and is genuinely doing fine now - I think the last teacher was a bit pants.

I used to sit with my daughter and she'd know all the answers (somehow she grasped maths pretty quickly..........not from me) and i'd look and think how did you do that!

The problem with my daughter is she learns 'chunking' the most ridiculous method in maths where as I used long division.

Do you know the method your child is using? I'm guessing you have the question, you have the answer, you don't know how to show the workings out?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Just imagine that the 50g chocolate bar is actually 50.0000g and needs to be divided by 32p.

32 goes into 50 once (1) and leaves 18 which you carry to the first 0 (making 180)
32 goes into 180 five times (5) and leaves 20
32 goes into 200 six times (6) and leaves 8
    32 goes into 80 twice (2) and leaves 16
32 goes into 160 five times (5) and leaves nothing.

So the answer is 1.5625 (grams per penny).

It's easier to explain in person.

Forgive me for asking but what age group is year 6? Long time since I was at school & I have no kids and I'm trying to remember the ages at which I could do various things at primary school. I know that when I left I could do addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. I can remember doing the times tables. Very useful for long division.
