Year 6 Maths homework - I must be thick!

Ok my stepson and I are really stuck on this problem:
The small bar of chocolate weighs 50g and costs 32p
The large bar weighs 200g and costs 80p

How many grams do you get for 1p from the small bar?

How many grams do you get for 1p form the large bar?

Then...
The large tin of tuna weighs 400g and costs £1
The small tin wieghs 220g and costs 60p

How many grams do you get for 1p in the large tin?

how many grams do you get for 1p in the small tin?

Seems so hard to me!
Help would be much appreciated! And how you got the answer please because obviously I want to know for myself and help him!

Divide the number of grams by the number of pennies.

    1.56 grams for the small

    2.5g for the large

    It's just equations - 50g=32p so 50g/32=1p

Still makes no sense to me.
I know how you got 2.5g and that makes sense to me but not in a proper mathematical way.
How did you get 1.56g - no calculator?

This way of thinking may help too...
When you are trying to work out any rate for example, miles per hour or in this case grams per penny.
It is always the first one that you say divided by the second.

In your question it doesn't say "per" but just substitute the words "do you get".

    I hope that helps.

How do you go from 32p to 1p? You divide by 32.

You do this to the other side. So 50g / 32 = 1.56g

    50:32
    ?:1

Another way of looking at it. What do you do to the right side to get there? Do the same on the left side.

    So

    50:32
    1.56:1

I've shown the proper mathemetical way.

It's basic equations........what you do to one side - you do to the other.

    50g=32p

You want to find out how much you get for 1p, so you have to divide both sides by 32

Another way of visualising it could be:
Lets use the 200g for 80p here.

Imagine the problem. You want to know how much of that big bar you can buy with just one penny.

Split your 80p into 80 pennies, visually or with real pennies, or bits of paper, each is 1p.

Now you need to split that bar up 80 ways too, or divide it by 80.

Once you think the problem through, the solution usually jumps out.

Another thought, does he have a maths text book you can both read through together, it will explain it simply and work through an example with you.
