Damaged in transit - please help

Sometimes people buy an item off ebay to replace something (identical) they have had for sometime - quite possibly they cannot return an item where is was originally purchased from because it's out of warranty, cannot be sourced in shops any longer, they lost the receipt etc and unfortunately there are some that would claim that they had received a broken sink and wished to return it but in fact would return their older item if you see what I mean? It is quite a common problem for sellers who deal in electrical items in particular.
Sounds like you have a huge case of Paranoia going on here. It happens occasionally with high end electrical but in no way is common (i'd love to see your evidence for this)
I'm afraid no matter what things get damaged in transit. This is the more likely reason than all these conspiracy theories.0 -
I'm sorry that you have this difficult situation to deal with it, must be frustrating for you. I think that once you have established via photos that there is damage then the only option you have is to refund in full, keep it all as friendly as possible and move on.
You can try to recoup as much as possible by reclaiming your ebay fees as I mentioned in an earlier post and perhaps you could put in a claim with RM - I'm not saying it would be successful given the article in question as it may be on an exemption list, but it could be worth 10 minutes of your time completing a claim form and you may get the maximum allowed for the service used (in the case of standard parcels I believe this would be £39) At the end of the day the buyer still has the right to open a SNAD through Pay Pal and if it went down that route all PP would do it instruct the buyer to return the sink to you (at their costs)0 -
Did you unpack the sink yourself when you bought it, then make sure it was ok before you repacked it to send it.
I've fitted a few, and tbh it's easier to make the hole bigger than force it in, and more likely to damage the worksurface if you try.
Even packaged it could break if it's dropped, I'm more with RM dropping it.
I've had porcelain items I've collected from the merchant myself, and a few have been broken in the box.0 -

No paranoia here from me, it's just something that I am aware of and it isn't just with high end electrical items. I know some sellers have had to start using security features to combat the problem. My comments have been mis-understood for which I apologise, I am obviously not expressing myself well. The quote you have used is where I was expaining how/why swap scams go on - my error was using the sink (which is a highly unlikely swap scam item) as an example.0 -
Thanks for all your comments, I do apprecite them.
I have no reason to doubt the buyer and prefer to believe everyone is honest unless I have proof that they are not.

Photos mean nothing to paypal. The OP will have to refund if not Paypal will force the issue.
I wasn't suggesting that OP use photos in a defense case. I just think that it is a considerable amount of money for OP to refund based on minimal information given in an email. With photos OP could satisfy himself that there genuinely is damage and that there would be no point in receiving the item back.
As I said, I think OP needs to refund and move on, I can't see the point in OP letting it get to the Pay Pal stage, it would only mean that OP's buyer would be further inconvenienced by having to arrange and pay for a return.0 -
You guys were kind enough to advise me and I thought you may like an update>
Buyer has sent me photos and the sink is broken in two pieces. It seems that the sink has not even been taken out of the packaging and there is no apparent damage to the box.
I have no doubt her claim is genuine and I shall be sending her a full refund."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I agree, what goes around, comes around.
Karma to you.:T
You have acted in a professional business-like manner. It is difficult when it is a substantial amount of money, but I for one, am glad you chose this route.
Good luck in the future and don't let it put you off Ebay. It wasn't Ebays fault. You will find your reward in the future.
I would be glad to have you as both a seller and a buyer.0 -

I'm glad that you've been able to resolve it quickly in a friendly way...it's obviously disapponiting for you but don't forget to re-claim your selling fees by requesting to cancel the transaction via ebay0
