i think OP's problem is that husband knows that cuts have to be made but as long as it is made without inconveniencing him, then it is fine by him
i think you should tell the family that 260 pounds have to be cut back every month. then put your suggestions there like own brand food, remove mobile phones from everybody, cut kids pocket money and lots of little and large suggestions. ask them as well for suggestions.
then basically let them choose what they can do without.
do not do it unilaterally as they will just blame you without taking any responsibility. make it a family thing. if they dont want to get involved, tell them you will be making cuts as appropriate and they just have to accept it.
if OH has a mobile phone, make sure he cancels his and gets a PAYG if it is absolutely necessary, same for kids. when it comes to choosing between their pocket money, mobiles and eating own brand, they will quickly come around
i dont see why OP has to go through the trouble of disguising own brand food. that way only she is taking responsibility for the budget and the rest of the family continue as they wish
good luck0 -
Yes I have tried the " you can do the shopping " as well. Even once got him to do a onlien grocery order, was great only £20 then I had to go on behind him and change it to what we really needed, you know things like toilet rolls, dog food, cleaning products lol
My biggest problem is teh " it's only £20 a month " attitude, teh £20 here and £20 there add up.
I would ask him to do it again. Once he's finished, ask him if it includes this, that and the other. DO NOT go back and fix it for him. He needs to understand a) exactly what is required in a monthly food shop and b) how much it costs.
It seems that his approach was to do it wrong on purpose, knowing you would have to fix it, so that you wouldn't ask again. Don't let him get away with it.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -

Double agree. Even say we have x amount to spend this week, we need loo roll, washing up liquid (whatever it is you need that week) and also breakfasts, lunches and dinners for us all.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

My children used to be similar - wanting the cereal with the characters on etc - really sucked in by advertising. So I invested a bit of money in loads of plastic cereal containers, boxes for the fridge etc and now decant the cereal, cooked meat etc into the boxes and they are none the wiser. I also find it keeps a lot fresher too. I just tell them that the boxes have already gone to the recycling!20K by Xmas 2010 (10 in 10 challenge - debt):

thanks for quick replies
Nothing wrong with own brnads but if hubby and kids ( teeangers ) know what it is they will not eat most things, I ahve had this arguement before so many times. An example is dairy spread is £1.70 a 500g tub but none of them will take the shop own brand at less than £1.............
Once I get final figures for the bills taht are increasing I will do new bufget, we go thorugh this in april every year. I am really annoyed as have had to dip into our emergency fund and need to get that repalced.
Teenagers of working age? if so get them out and working and take your board. It will give them money to spend on their own treats.
if they dont like own brand but you're forced to cut back then its tough love im afraid. Give an ultimatum to your hubby, he can either sell his motorbike/golf clubs/whatever it is he does or he can eat the cheaper groceries until you're out of the woods.
Either that or just refuse to go shopping, tell him he can do it and give him the budget to do it on.MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0 -
let him do the shopping, keep loo roll and a few washing tablets for yourself stashed in your handbag, and see how he copes with dirty drawers and no TP.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0
