Nothing wrong with own brnads but if hubby and kids ( teeangers ) know what it is they will not eat most things, I ahve had this arguement before so many times. An example is dairy spread is £1.70 a 500g tub but none of them will take the shop own brand at less than £1.............

I'm pretty sure they (including your OH!) will when it's eat the own brand stuff or don't eat.

I have seen me ending up throwing stuff out because noone wil eat it as it is cheaper brand, cooked meat, butter etc so was not very money saving to buy it to throw out. I am jsut fed up with them all

So if they don't eat it because it's the wrong brand don't replace it. It doesn't cost any more to throw it out than if they at it, as long as you don't then replace it with what they want.

Hi, do you have a Farmfoods store where you are, we tend to go through a lot of bread and milk and my OH can be quite fussy but have found that in ff they do 2 loaves of Hovis for £1 and 2 x 2litre milk for £1.50, saves me quite a bit.

I agree I would never buy basics sausages_pale_ but Mr S do a fantastic range of basics pork, lamb, stewing beef ,salmon ,white fish, chicken etc so you can buy cheaper;)

I buy the white fish and tell my lads it is cod:rotfl:

they dont know the difference once it has been cooked.
The frozen chicken is fine in a curry but the last time i had the stewing beef but the time i cut the fat and grissle out the meat we didn't have much meat left. Might just have been a doggy bag but the chilken is much better value and easier to use.

I couldnt agree more with this.:T

Do they realise with most brands you are paying for advertising ,fancy packaging and e- numbers. A lot of supermarket basics brands have less ingredients (it makes them cheaper) so are healthier ....and home made food only has what you put in it;). It has been proven that a lot of budget ranges are better for you than the "best ,taste the difference etc"! with less fat sugar and salt added.
I know its not you that needs convinsing -but why are your kids dictating what you buy?

thanks martin:rotfl:check out the supermarkets brand guide in this link;)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Before the First World War Mrs Peel wrote a book entitled 'How to feed your family at 10 shillings a head per week' (or similar title - ten shillings a Head, anyway).

One of the letters to her complained why had she written this and now her husband will be even more tiresome about the bills.

There is nothing new under the sun. On the one hand, even Mrs Peel accepted that if the family were fussy eaters then you couldn't do it. On the other hand, husbands still expected groceries to magically appear.

Also, mention food inflation being so much more than other inflation, it may help. Good luck.

This puts me a little in mind of my OH who has recently been complaining that when he first moved in, the shopping cost was around £35-£40 per week and is now hitting £60 and what exactly is it I am doing to make it go up so much?!

I have tried to explain to him that his mahoosive packed lunches for work might have something to do with it, plus his requests for meat-based meals (we're all veggie apart from him so I never used to buy any meat.) He insists on 3 choccy bars and 2 packets of crisps in his pack up as well as sandwiches, yogurt, fruit and some meaty snack like a pork pie, as well as anything else he can get his hands on - I never used to buy choc bars or crisps or cooked meat slices or pork pies etc etc... Yep he really has no idea!

I always make a 'big' tea as we all have sandwiches at lunch, which he'll wolf down then complain (again) an hour later he's starving...

I've done the saying he's quite welcome to do the weekly shop which he says he will (he never does LOL!) I often buy own-brand or budget stuff on some things which fortunately he isn't bothered about but if he was fussy I'd be doing the sneaky using-the-PG Tips-box-but-putting-Smartprice-tea-bags-in trick and all that malarkey - a bit of trickery will save a bit of earache for now I reckon!

OP - Are there any other areas that could be cut back? I think someone else asked this earlier, but I don't recall seeing a response.
